To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Soul Train, the Paley Center is screening five exemplary episodes of the influential series the last week of January and throughout February. In these programs you will see why Soul Train provided to the nation the latest trends in music, dance, and fashion, as well as why the host Don Cornelius became a television icon. The screenings occur Wednesdays to Sundays at 2:00 pm. We wish to thank Anthony Maddox and Donna Schaffer of Soul Train Holdings for making these screenings possible.
January 27 to 31
This Soul Train episode from April 22, 1972, features performances by Ike & Tina Turner and Jerry Butler. (60 minutes)
February 3 to 7
This Best of Soul Train compilation was broadcast on August 11, 1973, and spotlights many classic performers including James Brown, Chuck Berry, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, the Temptations, and the Four Tops. (60 minutes)
NOTE: On Feb. 4, this screening is at 4:30pm in the Spielberg Gallery.
February 10 to 14
This Soul Train episode from February 16, 1974, features performances by Marvin Gaye and the Whispers, as well as an interview with George Foreman. (60 minutes)
February 17 to 21
This Soul Train episode from October 5, 1974, features performances from Michael Jackson and MDLT, as well as a segment with Playboy Bunny of the Year Angie Chester. (60 minutes)
February 24 to 28
This 10th Anniversary Salute to Aretha Franklin from December 1, 1979, features the Queen of Soul performing solo and with Smokey Robinson. (60 minutes)
