CASTLE: THE FINAL NAIL (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy-drama series about a New York Police Department detective who grudgingly lets a rugged mystery-books author help solve murder cases. In this episode, Damian Westlake returns home with a friend, Charles, to find that his wife Vicky has been murdered with a nail gun. When Beckett arrives at the scene, she is surprised to find that Castle is already there, and he explains that Damian is an old friend from boarding school. Beckett attempts to question Damian, though Castle immediately jumps to his friend's defense, sure that he is not the killer. Esposito and Ryan talk to Vicky's co-worker, Amber, who explains that Vicky recently fired a carpenter who had been working in her home for stealing her 11-carat engagement ring and that the man threatened her in response. The man denies any guilt, however, stating that Vicky apologized to him when she found the ring at home, and Damian again looks guilty when the ring is found in evidence. Despite this, Castle remains convinced of his innocence, explaining to Beckett that Damian was the first person to encourage him as a writer. It is then revealed that a teenage Damian was the prime suspect in his father's murder, however, and Beckett furiously chastises Castle for not telling her about the previous homicide and sends him home.

Castle talks to Damian, who says that he was miles away at college when his father died, though admits that they did not get along and that he inherited millions upon his death. Vicky's ex-husband Simon tells Beckett that Vicky regretted her marriage to the unemployed Damian and was planning to return to him shortly before her death. Martha urges Castle to apologize to Beckett, which he does, and she allows him back onto the case just in time to hear that Damian's original inheritance is gone and that he received vast sums of money from Vicky's death. They then track down a criminal, Omar, whose signature graffiti tag was found at the crime scene, but he swears his innocence and states that he overheard Damian and Vicky fighting and Vicky demanding a divorce. A look into Damian's financials reveals a secret credit card and an affair, and his mistress Callie admits that Vicky "warned" her that Damian would be left penniless after the divorce and would eventually leave her for someone wealthy. She adds that Damian asked her to lie to the cops about the day of the murder, and Castle struggles to accept the damning evidence against his friend, with Beckett pointing out that he "made him up" as a character and does not truly know him as a person.

Beckett soon arrests Damian and Castle visits him in jail, where he admits that he and Vicky fought on the day of her death and that she then presented him with divorce papers. Castle gets an idea and produces Blanca the mail carrier, who swears that she saw Vicky alive at home before Damian left with Charles, suggesting that he is innocent after all. Beckett considers that he hired someone, as he could have done with his father, and Castle resolves to solve the father's murder. Beckett finds that Damian stole his wife's diamonds and replaced them with fakes, possibly to pay off a hitman, but Damian produces the diamonds in question and again swears that he is not a killer. Castle meets with the now-retired detective who worked on the father's case and explains that he recognizes a sketch in the file as Michael Rutherford, a sociopathic classmate of his and Damian's who may have robbed the Westlakes' home and killed the father, and Kate finds that Simon too is broke and is still named in Vicky's will. Esposito and Ryan find that Simon is now in a relationship with Amber, and Beckett realizes that Amber killed Vicky out of jealousy when Vicky unknowingly confided that she and Simon intended to reunite. Castle tells Damian that the killer has been found and adds that DNA evidence has confirmed Rutherford's guilt in his father's murder – but then accuses Damian of hiring Rutherford for the job, which is proven to be true. Damian is arrested and Castle is heartbroken at his misplaced faith in his old friend, and Beckett comforts him before heading off on a Valentine's Day date with Josh.
