KEVIN CAN WAIT: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this comedy series about a retired New York cop whose blissful retirement is thrown into chaos by his family's antics. In this episode, Kevin Gable excitedly prepares for his retirement party and is thrilled when his wife Donna gifts him with an odd-but-useful un-spillable bowl. He and his three cop buddies Duffy, Goody and Mott, who are also retiring, start to map out their fun-filled leisure time, observed by Doug's "active-duty" firefighter brother Kyle. The gang then learns that a fellow cop, Alvarez, has been kicked out by his wife and needs a place to stay, and upon learning that the man's father own a beer-and-hot dog establishment, Kevin immediately schemes to make Alvarez his new garage tenant. Donna, who would prefer to rent the empty space to a quiet elderly woman, is suspicious when Kevin rejects several worthy candidates. Their college-age daughter Kendra arrives home, and though Donna warns her not to tell her father about her new boyfriend at his party, Kendra admits that she has already invited her young man and his roommate for the evening.

Alvarez stops by for an interview, and though Donna is less than pleased to learn of his alcoholism and quickly deduces Kevin's selfish reasons for wanting to live with him, Kevin pleads with her to give him a chance, arguing that "cops help cops." At the party, Kendra introduces her father to her "friends," smooth-talking athlete Todd and his nerdy roommate Chale. Kevin tells Kendra that he has guessed her secret and approves of Todd – but Kendra reveals that it is Chale who is not only her boyfriend, but her fiancé. Kevin storms out in anger when Kendra reveals that she intends to drop out of school to support Chale until his finds success with his app idea, and when Donna finds him hiding upstairs, he admits that "everything was in place" for his idyllic retirement before the new surprises. Donna pushes him to make things right with Kendra, and he visits her at her waitressing job and tries to make her reconsider her plans. She asks for his trust, however, swearing that Chale is loving and trustworthy, and he finally offers to let the two of them move into the garage on the condition that she return to school. Kendra agrees, overjoyed, and though an unaware Chale seems ready to break up with Kendra for her own good, Kevin reluctantly stops him and tells him about the bargain. Now left without Alvarez's rent money, Kevin begins searching for a side job, though not before enjoying one last hurrah with his friends. Commercials deleted.
