PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL PREVIEWS 2018: ABC: THE ROOKIE {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 2018 Fall Preview PALEYFEST events in Los Angeles. This afternoon celebrates "The Rookie," the dramatic action series about a fortysomething former construction worker who decides to join the Los Angeles Police Department.
Host Rene Reyes (executive in charge of production, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks and introduces the pilot episode, which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 134106.) After the screening, Kate Hahn (journalist, TV Guide Magazine) moderates the following panelists: executive producer/creator/writer Alexi Hawley; executive producer and cast member Nathan Fillion (John Nolan); and cast members Titus Makin Jr. (Jackson West), Mercedes Mason (Captain Zoe Andersen), Richard T. Jones (Sergeant Wade Grey), Melissa O'Neil (Lucy Chen), Afton Williamson (Talia Bishop), Eric Winter (Tim Bradford), and Alyssa Diaz (Angela Lopez).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the series as "a character show masquerading as a cop show"; Hawley and Fillion's longtime collaboration on "Castle"; Nolan's challenging first day on the job, including witnessing a man's death. and praise for guest star Renes Rivera; how Nolan and Chen's secret romance will affect the story going forward; Williamson's appreciation for her character's strength and ambition; Bishop's growing appreciation for Nolan's "moral code"; Jones' views on Grey's evolving feelings toward Nolan; Mason's thoughts on Andersen's challenging role as a female leader and her decision to recruit Nolan because of his "life experience"; Winter's harrowing ride-alongs with real police officers, including an alarming incident involving a gang-member block party; Makin Jr.'s thoughts on West's moment of panic during the shootout; Diaz's consultations with real training officers; how realistic sound design and tactical training helps the actors to find authenticity in their performances; O'Neil's enjoyment of performing stunts and action scenes; whether higher-ranking officers Grey and Andersen will get to leave the office and join the other cops at crime scenes; stories of karaoke nights with Fillion and his younger co-stars; Hawley's interest in "living in the unexpected" and combining the characters in different ways; the actors' ideas for future team-ups; Bradford's complicated marriage to wife Isabel, played by Mircea Monroe, who struggles with drug addiction; why none of the actors could be police officers in real life, owing to the demands of great patience and mediation skills; and the show's "aspirational" portrayals of cops, as shown in the scene where the officers assist a mentally ill suspect.
