GOTTI {TAPE 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:51309. Part two of two. This made-for-television production, based on Jerry Capeci and Gene Mustain’s book “Gotti: Rise and Fall,” is about the life of mafia chief John “Johnny Boy” Gotti. As this part opens, Neil gives John advice about how to conduct himself with his peers, then passes away. John subsequently puts his plan in motion against Paul. On Dec. 16, 1985, at Spark’s Steak House, Paul heads to a designated meeting as John and Sammy watch in a car from across the street as Joe Dimiglia shoots Paul dead. Later, John is celebrated by his cohorts as he becomes the family’s boss. Later, John is tried for the assault of the trucker, but the trucker denies ever having seen John. Federal agent Bruce Mouw tells his colleagues that he wants John brought to justice, at whatever cost. John then hears that a RICO case is pending against him. Two FBI agents tell John that a capo in the Bonnano family has sanctioned a hit on him. They also assure John that they’ll take him down on the RICO charges. Outside the courtroom, reporters ask John if he is the head of the Gambino family, a charge that he denies. Shortly after hearing from Sammy that one of the jury members has been “bought,” verdicts of not guilty are announced for Angelo, Joe Dimiglia, Gene, and John. Reporters dub John “the Teflon don,” retiring his old nickname of “the dapper don.” Afterward, Angelo warns John that Sammy and Robert need to be watched. Later, Sammy, who’s recently been made “underboss” tells John that he’ll keep an eye on Robert. After a meeting at the Veterans and Friends Social Club, consigliere Frank DeCicco is blown up in his car. John quickly deduces that Robert is missing and seeks out Joe Armone’s advice. John is told by Joe that he is making enemies via his expensive suits and penchant for publicity – as when making the cover of Time magazine. At a subsequent meeting, John and Sammy question Robert’s loyalty, leading Sammy to have Robert killed. At the St. Bernadette Cancer Center, John goes to see the stricken Angelo, who apologizes for his past mistakes. Meanwhile, the FBI runs a check on Mrs. Michael Cirelli, who lives in John’s building and is the widow of one of Neil’s soldiers, then have her apartment bugged. John is soon informed by Bruce Mouw that another RICO case is being prepared against him, including a charge for the hit on Paul. John insists that no one in the family be allowed to cut any deals. Going to Mrs. Cirelli’s apartment, John talks with new consigliere Frank LoCascio, and a conversation is recorded in which Sammy is fingered for Robert’s murder. On Dec. 11, 1990, FBI agents surround the building and arrest John, Sammy, and Frank LoCascio. In a courtroom, the incriminating tape is played for John, Sammy, and a judge. The judge opts to hold the men without bail. In jail, Sammy confronts John about “backdooring” him on the tape, and John explains his reasoning in a cavalier fashion. John later hears that Sammy has agreed to testify against him. John later tells Frank that Sammy – who’ll be charged with one count of racketeering before going into the Witness Protection Program – must look at himself every morning in the mirror as “the rat.” On March 2, 1992, Sammy takes the stand against John. On April 2, the jury finds both John and Frank guilty on all counts, after which John is sentenced to life imprisonment in Marion Federal Penitentiary in Illinois. As John enters the prison, he reflects on Neil’s words and determines how to live out the remainder of his life.
