WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: THE LION KING 2: SIMBA'S PRIDE (TV)

Summary

One of this series of Disney movies presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney." This direct-to-video animated musical film is a sequel to 1994's "The Lion King," which tells the story of a young African lion, Simba, and his life's journey to his place as king of Pride Rock. Michael Eisner, chief executive officer of Disney, introduces the movie and briefly discusses the "Lion King" Broadway show as well as the millennium celebrations at Walt Disney World in Florida, including the multicultural "Tapestry of Nations" event. The program begins as Rafiki proudly presents Simba and Nala's new cub to the animals of Pride Rock as Simba remembers his father Mufasa, knowing that "He Lives In You." Timon and Pumbaa discuss their plans for "raising" the young heir, shocked to learn that it is a girl, Kiara. The young princess grows up to be curious and adventurous, but overprotective Simba warns her to be careful and to avoid the outlands, which are full of "outsiders." He sends Timon and Pumbaa to watch after her, but they are distracted by a meal of grubs and Kiara wanders into the outlands and encounters the brash young Kovu. They run into a float of angry crocodiles and barely escape with their lives, and Kiara is impressed at Kovu's bravery. Simba and Kovu's mother Zira arrive, however, and Simba reminds her that they are banished from the Pride Lands, though Zira asserts that Kovu was "hand-chosen" by the villainous Scar to be his heir. The young lions are separated, and Simba chastises Kiara for getting into danger, reminding her that she is part of the circle of life and that "We Are One."

In the desolate outlands, Zira's resentful older son Nuka complains about his "chosen one" little brother, and Zira scolds Kovu for trying to befriend the daughter of their enemy, but then gets an idea and decides to use Kovu to bring down Simba, celebrating his defeat as "My Lullaby." Rafiki updates Mufasa and is surprised to realize that Kiara and Kovu are destined to fall in love, and as the years pass, Zira trains Kovu to be a vengeful killer. Kiara prepares for her first solo hunt, though she has no luck and, annoyed to see that Simba has sent Timon and Pumbaa to watch over her, leaves the Pride Lands. Kovu and sister Vitani set fire to the plains as part of Zira's plan, and Kiara is soon trapped. Kovu rescues her, and she is surprised to recognize him as her one-time childhood friend. A panicked Simba arrives and is taken aback when Kovu requests to join their pride, saying that he has left his people and is nothing like Scar. Simba reserves judgment, but allows him to come to Pride Rock, and Kiara suggests that Kovu should teach her some of his advanced hunting skills. Nuka and Zira spy on Kovu's progress, intending for Kovu to use Kiara to get close to the king, and Simba suffers nightmares about his father's death and his uncle's treachery. Kiara and Kovu head out for their hunting lesson, but end up goofing off with Timon and Pumbaa, though Kovu is unused to having frivolous fun. Later, while stargazing, Kovu wonders if he has Scar's "darkness" inside of him as well. Simba seeks advice from Nala and Mufasa's spirit about accepting Kovu, and Kovu begins to experience doubts about his mission.

Rafiki, playing matchmaker, teaches Kiara and Kovu all about love, or "Upendi," and they begin to fall for one another. Simba has a serious talk with Kovu about overcoming past hatred, but Zira and her lionesses suddenly appear and Simba is shocked to learn of Kovu's duplicity as they attack. Nuka, desperate to prove himself to Zira, chases after Simba, but is killed by falling logs. Zira furiously blames Kovu for betraying the pride and killing his brother, marking his face like Scar's. Simba makes it back to Pride Rock and Kiara is stunned to hear of Kovu's actions, and when Kovu appears to ask for forgiveness, Simba coldly exiles him, with all of the animals agreeing that Kovu is "Not One Of Us." Kiara protests that Kovu is good at heart and truly loves her, but Simba declares that he is just like Scar. She runs off to find Kovu, however, and they reunite happily, deciding that "Love Will Find A Way." Kovu suggests running away together, but Kiara says that they must put an end to the fighting. Timon and Pumbaa fret about the missing Kiara, and Zazu tells Simba that Zira and her pride have arrived for war. The two groups finally clash in a fierce battle and Zira fights Simba, but Kovu and Kiara arrive and intervene, with Kiara pointing out that they are all the same and that there is no need for hatred. Zira's lionesses agree and decide to make peace, but Zira attacks again and falls over a cliff edge, and though Kiara tries to save her, she falls into the river below to her death. All of the lions, including the former outlanders, return to their home at Pride Rock. Simba admits his mistake to Kovu and accepts him as Kiara's mate, and Mufasa praises his son's leadership from above. Includes commercials and promos.
