HILL STREET BLUES: DR. HOOF AND MOUTH (TV)
Summary
One in this series of police dramas about the personal and professional lives of the officers of Hill Street Station, a precinct located in a run-down urban area.
In this episode, Jablonski explains that Perez has been suspended, warning the cops to "let the pressure out" before they hit their limits. Renko is named the new PBA rep, and Davenport's replacement, Connie Chapman, arrives for her first day. Soon-to-be-homeless Belker ponders his next move, and Bates is upset to learn that her foster son Fabian's mother Vivian has kicked drugs and wants him back. At the scene of a hit-and-run, the cops are upset to realize that the sole survivor, Jerome Simmons, whose wife and two children were killed before his eyes, has outstanding warrants and must be arrested. LaRue soon arrests Dr. Ted Rose, the dentist who has been gassing and molesting his female patients, and he pleads with Davenport to consider psychiatric treatment rather than jail. Chapman struggles to take his claims seriously. Bates realizes that she likely cannot afford a drawn-out custody case over Fabian, while elsewhere Hunter finally buys an RV.
Bates visits Vivian and tries to persuade her to allow her son a more stable home, though Vivian defiantly swears that she has ended her life of crime and found honest work, concluding that Fabian himself must make the decision. Daniels questions Furillo about Jerome's charges, hoping that he can be let off lightly because of the tragedy. Carl Barnett arrives at the station house, stating that his car, the one used to kill the Simmons family, was stolen by an unknown person. Having discovered Barnett's own criminal past, however, the police sit him down for questioning. When Jerome spots Barnett in the line-up, he immediately flies into a rage and attacks him, seemingly confirming that Barnett was the actual driver. Hunter and Belker confront a would-be RV thief, and Mayo, who went undercover with Rose, is outraged to find that LaRue has been showing the tape of the incident around as a sort of "peep show."
To everyone's surprise, Jerome retracts his identification of Barnett, and Hill, sure that he is being paid off by Barnett's lawyer, furiously confronts Jerome about his apparent lack of love for his family. Barnett's wife attempts to alibi him, though Furillo sees through her half-hearted lies and urges her not to protect a killer. Bates talks with Fabian, who ultimately decides to go back to Vivian; Judge Alan Wachtel is not entirely moved by Rose's pleas for leniency and sends him to jail for the night. Jerome is released on his own recognizance, and Barnett angrily speaks up about the "Gestapo police tactics," further angering Hill and the others. LaRue apologizes to Mayo, and Davenport is surprised with a farewell party. Tape cuts off about six minutes before the end of the program. Commercials deleted.
