HOPE & FAITH: PHONE HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Hope Shanowski and her family, including her outrageous former soap-star sister Faith Fairfield. In this episode, Hope and Faith prepare for their father Jack's arrival for Thanksgiving, speculating about this year's young and ditzy new girlfriend. Hope urges Faith to finally tell Jack the truth about her soap opera, but Faith argues that he would be "devastated" to learn that his celebrity daughter has lost her job. Jack arrives, and the sisters are surprised to see that his girlfriend Summer is actually an intelligent, funny and age-appropriate woman. Faith hastily claims that she is playing her characters' "ghosts" on the show, and Charley is alarmed when Jack announces that his present to him is a shiatsu massage. Hope and Faith's contentment with Summer is dashed when she casually mentions that she was once abducted by aliens, and they scheme to clue Jack in, hoping that he will end the relationship with the loopy woman. Charley assures Hope that Jack and Summer are not likely to last anyway, and the kids are soon scared by Faith's outlandish alien stories.
Jack reveals that he intends to propose to Summer, and Summer overhears the sisters' unkind gossip about her strange tale. Jack informs his daughters that he knows of Summer's "quirk" but is unconcerned by it, pointing out that their own mother had idiosyncrasies of her own, and explains that his girlfriend makes him truly happy. Chagrined, Hope and Faith are distressed to find that Summer has left the home because of their insults, and Charley is finally forced to undergo the embarrassing massage with his father-in-law as the sisters rush off to the airport to make things right. They sneak onto the crowded flight dressed as employees, though they are then mistaken for real flight attendants, and they apologize to Summer over the intercom, assuring her that they would be happy to have her in the family. Thrilled, Summer rushes off the plane and back to Hope's house, where she happily accepts Jack's proposal. Faith finally admits the truth about losing her soap, though Hope covers for her with an even bigger lie, and Charley is revealed to have had an unfortunate allergic reaction to the massage. Includes commercials and promos.
