CBS REPORTS: EDITION SIX: WITH BILL MOYERS AND MARLENE SANDERS {INTO THE MOUTHS OF BABES ...; GOING, GOING ... GONE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of irregularly scheduled in-depth reports hosted by Bill Moyers and Marlene Sanders. First in "Edition Six" is "Into the Mouths of Babes ...," in which Moyers reports on how baby formula is being misused in developing nations. Moyers reports from Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, on malnutrition problems in that country, wondering whether the switch from breast milk to formula is causing the problems. Moyers discusses why critics believe formula can't be used safely in Third World countries, touching on the unsanitary water that is common in such locales. Producer Janet Roach talks with some Dominican mothers about how they use formula. Then, Moyers details the "multi-national" corporations that produce baby formula, and the "image" they use to try and push their product. Jack Stafford, senior vice president of American Home Products, and Robin Chandler Duke, a member of the board of directors, discusses the company's position on the safety of their baby formula. Moyers then examines how companies and Third World hospitals are working to prevent misuse of baby formula in developing countries. Then, Moyers examines a Minneapolis/St. Paul march calling for a boycott of Nestle products in an attempt to alter industry practices on advertising baby formula. Moyers details a May hearing before Senator Edward M. Kennedy's Subcommittee on Health and Scientific Research between baby formula critics and companies to address the potential health hazards of the products and whether they are being distributed responsibly. Moyers examines how the Dominican government is trying to educate its citizens on the value of breast milk over formula, yet how medical professionals in the country continue to push the product. He also questions if physicians are receiving monetary feedback for their support of the formula. Finally, Moyers offers his own commentary on what he believes the formula companies, doctors, and governments should do to protect Third World country children who are unable to protect themselves. Next in "Edition Six" is "Going, Going ... Gone," in which Sanders reports on the disappearance of Southern black landowners due to complex ownership laws. Sanders discusses how black landowners often lose their family land due to the lack of wills in the black community. Sanders examines a "tax sale" in Buford, South Carolina, where "heirs' property" -- land which was not deeded in a will and is thus divided between the heirs, but can't be divided, mortgaged, built upon, developed or sold voluntarily -- is auctioned. Sanders talks with Joseph Brooks of the Emergency Land Fund, which is trying to reverse the decline in black-owned land, on what blacks are forced to do after losing their land and the consequent social ramifications. Then, Sanders examines some lawyers who fight for poor blacks' rights to maintain their heirs' property and how the law regards these cases, specifically examining "partition sales" where black-owned land is often auctioned to white people at below-market rates. One partition sale is examined that pits two cousins against each other, which eventually gets called off due to the reduction of a lawyer's fee. Then, a sale in Camden, Alabama, is examined where a unique situation arises: One of the land's black owners bids on his own land, hoping to use it as an investment. Then, Sanders learns that there's more to the story, as some of the heirs involved in the partition sale seem to have been tricked out of half of their potential earnings. Sanders offers her final commentary on the issue, noting that the laws are hastening blacks landowners' migration to cities. Commercials deleted.
