Summary

Continued from T:05941. Chapter three of this nine-part mini-series based on Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel that follows the divergent paths of the two Jordache brothers -- Rudy, the educated and ambitious one, who triumphs over his impoverished background, and Tom, the unruly rebel -- from 1945 to the 1960s. This chapter opens with Tom, now a promising boxer, returning to his hometown of Port Phillip, New York, to find that the family bakery has been replaced by a supermarket, his brother and mother have moved away, and his father is dead. Rudy graduates from college and is offered a job by Mr. Calderwood as assistant manager of his store. On graduation night he goes to New York City to celebrate and looks up Julie. He finds that she is married to the surly, alcoholic would-be writer Willie, has a son, and is trying to launch a career as a photographer. Later on, Julie, in an attempt to help Willie with his articles for a New York magazine, catches the attention of his editor, Asher Berg, who offers her a full-time job as a photographer. Meanwhile, on the night he wins a big fight, Tom's wife, Teresa, gives birth to a son. Commercials deleted. Continues with T:05943.
