
NEW SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR, THE (TV)
Summary
One in this weekly series of comedy/variety shows, hosted by comedy-singing duo Tom and Dick Smothers, which features traditional variety acts and musical performances. On this program, the Smothers Brothers are joined by the Kingston Trio, Jim Stafford, Robert Shields, Steven Wright, Bob Moore's Mongrels, Pat Paulsen, the vaudeville troupe Nuts and Bolts, Geoffrey Lewis and Celestial Navigations, Larry Cisewsky, and the Lester Wilson Dancers. Highlights include: Tom and Dick bicker while trying to perform a simple, classic comedy routine; Dick tries to encourage Tom to perform "safe comedy," an allegory about "safe sex" in the age of AIDS, canine entertainers known as Bob Moore's Mongrels perform; stone-faced comedian Pat Paulsen lectures about the rules of humor; the Kingston Trio sing a medley of their hits, including "M.T.A.," "Reverend Mr. Black," and "Tom Dooley"; mime Robert Shields performs; Jim Stafford sings "Sorry, You're a Little Bit Late"; deadpan comic Steven Wright offers his surreal comedy stylings; England's vaudeville comedy troupe Nuts and Bolts entertains; raconteur Geoffrey Lewis spins a tale to the jazzy, ethereal music of Celestial Navigations; the "Amazing" Larry Cisewsky catches arrows in mid-flight with his bare hand; Tom Smothers performs as "Yo Yo Man," a superhero who battles the forces of evil in a spoof of James Bond spy thrillers; and the Lester Wilson Dancers perform a dance number set in a fictional senior citizens' home, to the tune of "The Joint Is Jumpin'." Commercials deleted.
