WORLD SERIES, 1988: GAME 1 {LOS ANGELES DODGERS VS. OAKLAND ATHLETICS} (TV)

Live coverage of the first game of the 1988 World Series at Dodger Stadium between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Oakland Athletics. Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola call the action, with commentary and analysis from Bob Costas and Marv Albert. Scully and Garagiola discuss which of the Dodgers' impact players will be sidelined for the game, and Costas and Albert talk about the matchup between the two pitchers, Tim Belcher for the Dodgers and Dave Stewart for the Athletics. Highlights from the game include the following: Athletics slugger Jose Canseco gets hit by a pitch in the first inning, which draws Lasorda out of the dugout to argue; Belcher loads the bases with two outs and pitches himself out of the inning; Stewart's very first pitch hits Steve Sax on the arm, setting the tone of the game; the third base umpire calls a balk on Stewart, sending Sax to second base; Mickey Hatcher sends the ball over the left-field fence for a two-run home run; and the first inning ends with the Dodgers leading 2-0. Belcher starts the second inning by giving up a single and then walking the next two batters, loading the bases once again; Canseco hits a screaming line-drive grand-slam home run to deep center field; and at the bottom of the second inning the Athletics lead the Dodgers 4-2. At the start of the third inning, Tim Leary pitches for the Dodgers, and during the top half of the fourth inning Athletics manager Tony LaRussa argues with the umpire when Dave Parker is called out for running to first base inside the base lane.
The pace of the game picks up as pitchers Tim Leary of the Dodgers and Dave Stewart of the Athletics start to throw good pitches; in the sixth inning, Brian Holton begins pitching for the Dodgers; in the bottom of the sixth inning, Mike Marshall makes a single -- the first Dodger hit since the second inning; the next two batters for the Dodgers also get hits, narrowing the score to 4-3, with the Athletics leading as the sixth inning ends. Next, Costas runs through a segment called "Keys to Success," which encapsulates the game thus far. The Dodgers make headway in the bottom of the seventh, but Stewart surrenders no runs; the Dodgers bring in their fourth pitcher, Alejandro Pena, to start the eighth inning; the Athletics cling to a one-run lead at the top of the ninth inning; the dominating closer for the Athletics, Dennis Eckersley, goes into the game to try and shut the door on the Dodgers; Dodger star Kirk Gibson sits in the dugout, barely able to walk because of a serious ligament sprain in his knee; Eckersley sends Dodger pinch hitter Mike Davis walking; and with two outs in the ninth inning, Gibson comes hobbling out of the dugout to bat. After Gibson hits several foul balls, Davis steals second base, which puts the tying run in a scoring position for the Dodgers. Gibson connects on a pitch and muscles it over the right-field fence for a two-run home run that wins the game, causing pandemonium to break out at Dodger Stadium. After rounding the bases, Gibson is mobbed by his teammates as he crosses home plate, and Costas interviews Gibson after his dramatic home run. Includes commercials and promos.
