LIVING AND WORKING IN SPACE: THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN (TV)
Summary
A film that depicts what it might be like to colonize outer space, based on the testimony of scientists who are currently working toward that goal. With popular actors playing in short skits about living and working on the moon, the film dramatizes various aspects of life in space as highlighted by the scientists, technicians, engineers and designers who will make human developments in space a reality. Framed by the story of a student who almost drops his math class but ends up being a math teacher in space years later, the program touches upon the difficulties of getting people (and the essentials they need to live) into space in the first place, as well as ways to compensate for the lack of water and food (such as mining for hydrogen and oxygen, making water out of them, and growing food in that water hydroponically). With an impressive roster of scientists and designers on hand, the program delves into the various adjustments that have to be made with regard to zero gravity. These include changing such basics as the way we bathe, eat, go to the bathroom, and sleep, in addition to creating new sports and exercises. In the final fictional segment, the Commissioner for Lunar Development watches several hologram faxes in which entrepreneurs pitch their ideas for services they would like to offer residents of the moon.
