WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: PRINCESS OF THIEVES (TV)

Summary

One of this series of Disney movies presented under the umbrella title "The Wonderful World of Disney." This made-for-television production is about Robin Hood's rebellious teenage daughter, Gwyn. The program begins by discussing the legend of Robin Hood, and the tale that has been lost to time of Gwyn, the daughter of Robin and Maid Marian. In Nottingham, England, during the reign of Richard the Lionheart in 1184, the Sheriff of Nottingham is informed of Gwyn's birth. The Sheriff is happy to hear that the child is female, not wanting a son of Robin to further plague him. By her teenage years, Gwyn finds herself studying Latin and doing chores like a milkmaid. She complains to her best friend Froderick that she feels Richard has abandoned his people by continuing the Crusades in Jerusalem, rather than warding off the evil perpetrated on locals by his brother, Prince John. Meanwhile, Robin heads toward home, sending two white birds to signal his followers that he is on his way. Gwyn tells Friar Tuck that she struggles to think of Froderick as husband material, as she is already better than him at archery. That night, Gwyn wonders why her father has yet to return after an absence of five years. Finally, he arrives with Will Scarlett. Meanwhile, the Sheriff and his henchman Cardaggian are alerted by a mysterious courier that Richard is dying after getting a crossbow through the neck, and likely won't survive his journey home. The Sheriff toasts the future king, John, sure that Richard's illegitimate son Philip will never be allowed to reign. The messenger reveals that he is in fact John and was simply testing the Sheriff's loyalty. John tells the Sheriff to kill Philip and make it look like he was slain by robbers. However, the Sheriff fears that Robin may have been instructed by Richard to protect Philip. Elsewhere, Will wonders why Robin isn't spending time with Gwyn. Robin is more concerned with preserving Richard's kingdom and finding Philip. Gwyn wishes to go with her father on the mission, but he refuses.

Meanwhile, in Northern France, Philip and his valet Conrad travel by carriage toward the coast, where they'll sail for England. En route, Philip admits that he has no desire to wear the crown. That evening, Froderick comes to a still-upset Gwyn, who reveals that she wants to fight with her father. Froderick notes that he is a coward. Meanwhile, Countess Tourtelot reveals to co-conspirators that she is plotting with John to have Philip killed. Overhearing the conversation, Conrad alerts Philip and they take off on their own. At the same time, Gwyn shears her long hair, trying to look like a boy so she can join the fight against John. Gwyn tells Froderick that Philip is the only chance to bring peace to the country, after which they both depart on horseback to find Philip. Back in Northern France, on foot, Philip and Conrad find a boat in which they can cross the English Channel. At the same time, the Sheriff continues to search for both Philip and Robin. In the Port of Harwich, Gwyn wanders through the market, causing trouble when she protects a young child from a merchant and steals some venison pies to give to other hungry youths. Sprinting away, she encounters Froderick and has to borrow his horse to flee. Meanwhile, Conrad wonders how he and Philip will meet up with Robin once reaching England. Back in the forest, Gwyn and Froderick rest and lunch. Then, the two hear John's search party looking for Philip, and Gwyn is forced to flee lest she be killed. However, Gwyn is surrounded until Robin and Will rescue her. Gwyn forces them to let her make her scheduled rendezvous with Froderick. However, Froderick has been captured by John's men, giving the Sheriff a chance to question Froderick about the pie thief, and Robin. The Sheriff decides to release Froderick and have him secretly followed.

That night, Robin meets with Froderick, after which the Sheriff's men surround and capture both Robin and Will. Gwyn and Froderick watch from afar, knowing they must do something. By morning, Philip and Conrad have made it to Harwich, where Cardaggian feigns being Robin. Just then, Conrad receives an arrow in his back as the Sheriff's men move in. Philip escapes, but the Sheriff's men believe the downed Conrad to be the man they want. Robin and Will are then taken to the Tower of London, where they are imprisoned. Meanwhile, Philip comes upon Gwyn in the forest, first confusing her for being a man. They bicker for a bit before agreeing to ride to Nottingham together. Then, the Sheriff, who believes that Philip is dead, returns to Nottingham just in time for the Harvest Festival. There, John is pleased to hear of Philip's death, until the Countess reveals that Conrad is the man in the coffin. A furious John charges to the Tower, questioning Robin and Will as to Philip's whereabouts. Gwyn and Philip later arrive in Nottingham, where she finally reveals that she is trying to save Philip, while Philip -- under the guise of being Conrad -- claims that Robin set a trap for Philip. Philip tells Gwyn that Philip is dead, thinking he can then travel anonymously back to France and stay in safety. She urges "Conrad" to help her save Robin and defeat John's army. Meanwhile, John orders Cardaggian to find and kill Philip. Back in Nottingham, Gwyn decides to compete in the festival's archery tournament since the victor will gain entry to the king's castle, where she believes her father is being held. At the competition, Gwyn shoots poorly, before the Sheriff changes the rules of the competition. Gwyn subsequently shoots as Philip's proxy and ends the contest via her remarkable marksmanship. Gwyn's impressive style reminds the Sheriff of Robin's expertise.

That night, at the king's dinner, Gwyn and Philip make plans to spring Robin and Will from prison. At the dinner, Philip recognizes Cardaggian as the man that pretended to be Robin in order to dupe him. Thus, Gwyn and Philip flee the dinner and head back to the forest, where they come upon Tuck and Froderick. Gwyn tells the group that Philip is dead and that they now need to rise up against John. Later, Gwyn is elated to see that Robin's followers have captured the Sheriff, who informs her where Robin and Will are being held. Gwyn tries to barter the Sheriff for her father. That night, Philip and Froderick talk about the "forest people," with Froderick claiming that he is bethrothed to Gwyn. Froderick tells Gwyn he doesn't trust "Conrad," thinking he does not act like the manservant he claims to be. Later, the tied-up Sheriff uses a ruse to dupe Froderick and escapes from his ropes. Gwyn is furious at Froderick, thinking his ineptitude could lead to Robin being killed. Philip decides that they need to march to London to free Robin. Meanwhile, John informs Robin -- who is being stretched on the rack -- that he is about to become king as Richard is now dead. At the same time, a rumor circulates through the market that Philip is still alive. In Epping Forest, near London, Philip and Gwyn's army camp for a bit. There, Gwyn apologizes to Froderick for yelling at him earlier. Froderick is hurt that Gwyn loves "Conrad." Later, Gwyn tells Philip that she is not bethrothed to Froderick and he immediately kisses her. Then, Froderick reports to Gwyn on the rumor that Philip is alive. Thus, Philip himself must reveal the truth about his identity. After apologizing for his lies, he says that his cowardly plan to return to France has changed; he has witnessed John's atrocities and realizes that he must embrace his destiny. Later, Gwyn and Philip walk into a trap set by the Sheriff's army. During the ensuing battle, Froderick jumps in front of an arrow to save Philip and receives a flesh wound to the shoulder. Later, at Westminster Abbey, John's coronation ceremony begins. Meanwhile, Gwyn and Philip finally make it to the Tower, where they spring Robin and Will. A battle ensues with the Sheriff's men, as Robin and the Sheriff square off. Robin is able to escape with help from his daughter, after which he slays Cardaggian. Then, Philip stops John's coronation and takes back his rightful throne. A bit later, Philip and Gwyn tearfully realize that they can never be man and wife, as he is royalty and she remains a commoner. However, she says that she will continue to serve him, just as Robin served Richard. Finally, Gwyn comes to terms with her father, who says that they'll continue their adventures as partners. Includes commercials.

(Network varies; this series was also telecast on NBC from 1961 to 1981 and on CBS from 1981 to 1983.)
