Summary
Part one of a thirteen-part series tracing the development of Western European civilization in its art and architecture. This program concerns the works of art of the tenth century and their embodiment of ideas that are seemingly inherent in all civilizations: a sense of permanence, religious and philosophical commitment, and the energy and spirit of internationalism. The program focuses on early Anglo-Saxon Christians and their ornaments and weapons, and emphasizes the importance of Emperor Charlemagne, the first ruler to unite Europe and make the church a humanizing influence. Includes footage of a Celtic mission made on the sacred British isle of Iona. Also features the books Charlemagne had produced and his reproduction of the Church of San Vitale in Constantinople.
