BELLE OF 14TH STREET, THE (TV)

Summary

In this television special, Barbra Streisand and Jason Robards star in a musical revue patterned after a vaudeville show, featuring music from the turn-of-the-century through the mid-1920s. The program begins with Robards, as Mr. Alf Yates, performing "You're De Apple of My Eye," followed by Streisand as the Unforgettable Forget-Me-Not, singing "Alice Blue Gown." John Bubbles, as Mr. Chanticleer, sings and dances to "I'm Goin' South." As the Dancing Duncans, Streisand, Robards, Lee Allen, and Susan Alpern perform the patriotic "We're Four Americans," followed by Streisand as the diva Mme. Schmausen-Schmidt, singing "Liebestraum" and "Mother Machree." In a dramatic turn, Streisand and Robards (as the Mungers) enact several scenes from Shakespeare's "The Tempest." In the final segment, Streisand, as the Belle of 14th Street, sings a medley of "My Melancholy Baby," "Everybody Loves My Baby," "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows," "My Buddy," "A Good Man is Hard to Find," and "Some of These Days," with piano accompaniment by Jack Murray.
