JEWEL IN THE CROWN, THE, EPISODE 3: QUESTIONS OF LOYALTY (TV)
Summary
Part three of this epic fourteen-part drama which chronicles the final turbulent years of English rule in India from 1942-1947. Based on author Paul Scott's "The Raj Quartet," this mini-series concentrates on the intricate personal relationships of British and Indian characters against the backdrop of India's struggle to assert its sovereignty from the declining British Empire. In the third episode, "Questions of Loyalty," Daphne Manners decides to go to term with a baby that may belong to her Indian lover Hari Kumar or may be the result of the sexual assault she suffered amid the riotous wave of violence which consumed Mayapore, India, after the British Empire incarcerated Mahatma Gandhi. Manners dies in Kashmir, however, during the birth of her daughter, Parvati, a half-caste child whose care is entrusted to Daphne's aunt, Lady Ethel Manners, a senior member of the old Raj, causing a scandal among her British associates.
Meanwhile police official Ronald Merrick, who brutally tortured Kumar and framed him for participating in the young woman's rape, is transferred from the police to the military in Mirat. Outside of Merrick's home, someone mysteriously leaves a bicycle, a symbol of the piece of evidence which he used to traduce Kumar. Merrick has the bicycle discarded as he helps his new roommate Teddie Bingham plan his wedding to Sarah Layton.
