JEWEL IN THE CROWN, THE, EPISODE 14: THE DIVISION OF THE SPOILS (TV)

Summary

Part fourteen of this epic fourteen-part drama which chronicles the final turbulent years of English rule in India from 1942-1947. Based on author Paul Scott's "The Raj Quartet," this mini-series concentrates on the intricate personal relationships of British and Indian characters against the backdrop of India's struggle to assert its sovereignty from the declining British Empire. In the fourteenth and concluding episode, "The Division of the Spoils," which takes place in 1947, Perron, on the eve of his departure from Mirat for Ranpur with the Laytons, speaks with Count Bronowsky about Ronald Merrick's death.

The Count reveals that Merrick had recently become involved in a homosexual relationship with a young Indian servant boy, not realizing the boy was a dupe in a plot to savagely murder him as much-delayed retribution for the torture and traduction of Hari Kumar. The following morning, Perron, Ahmed Kasim, the Layton sisters, Theodore, and Aunt Fenny board the train for Ranpur. Armed Hindus stampede the train when it is stopped momentarily and murder all the Muslims, including Ahmed, who sacrifices himself to save his British counterparts. Ruing the state of India after three hundred years of British rule, Sarah travels on to Ranpur with the others, while Perron returns to Mirat to explain the situation to officials at the palace. Before his final departure from the welter of India's muddled politics and history, Perron attempts to locate Hari Kumar, hoping to finally meet again with his mysterious Chillingborough classmate, without disturbing the solitary life Kumar has led during the dissolution of the Raj.

(This series also aired on PBS under the umbrella of "Mobil Masterpiece Theatre" from December 16, 1984 through March 17, 1985.)
