PETULA {THE GLASER FOUNDATION FIRST AMENDMENT COLLECTION} (TV)

Summary

This television special stars Petula Clark, with special guest Harry Belafonte. This program offers an almost continuous string of songs by Clark, most staged on elaborate, stylized sets, with similarly vivid costumes, numerous dancers, and backup singers. The performances are edited so that the songs and stagings flow smoothly together. An opening credit sequence shows Clark riding on horseback, standing on the beach, silhouetted against setting sun, sitting in a field of flowers, playing with children, and meandering through other landscapes.

The singer opens the show with an explanation of her name, asking viewers simply to call her "Pet." She then croons a sequence of songs, including: "Who Am I?"; "Las Vegas"; "The 'In' Crowd"; "We Can Work it Out"; "The Other Man's Grass is Always Greener"; "Elusive Butterfly"; "Imagine"; "Come Rain or Come Shine"; and "Just Say Goodbye." Clark goes on to perform a song with the El Rodeo Elementary School Orchestra, under the direction of Gene Eaves. Next, Belafonte appears on stage and sings several songs, including "Ham-Bone" and "Both Sides Now." He is joined by Clark for "On the Path of Glory." Clark relaxes with a cup of tea and tells viewers that she recently had tea with a queen. She turns out to be talking about the Queen Mary, the retired ocean liner turned hotel. Clark is seen wandering about the ship, singing "Live for Life." Back in front of her studio audience, she performs a final cluster of songs, including the hit from her first American film, "Finian's Rainbow," "How Are Things In Glocca Morra?"; her latest song, "Have Another Dream On Me"; and her signature tune, "Downtown." Includes commercials.
