Summary
One in this news magazine series co-anchored by Sam Donaldson and Diane Sawyer. President George Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush lead Donaldson and Sawyer on a rare guided tour of the private residential portion of the White House. The Bushes comment on the historical significance of the following rooms and their contents, among others: the famous Lincoln Bedroom, which contains a signed, handwritten copy of the Gettysburg Address; an elegant room that was traditionally reserved for visiting queens and favored by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who reportedly wandered around the halls nude late at night; and the formal Yellow Oval Room and Bush's private office, which doubles as a repository for toys for visiting grandchildren. The Bushes are accompanied on the tour by their dog, Millie, who displays a comic tendency to perform embarrassing, intimate grooming chores while on camera. The Bushes also share their home movies, which were taken during a recent extended family vacation in Kennebunk Port, Maine. At the conclusion of the tour, Sawyer and Donaldson interview the couple, covering such topics as a proposed summit with the Soviet Union; controversial policies such as capital gains tax rates and assault weapons; and the devastation caused by Hurricane Hugo.
