GEORGE BURNS AND GRACIE ALLEN SHOW, THE: GEORGE LECTURES AT UCLA (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series starring the husband-and-wife team of George Burns and Gracie Allen as themselves. As the star of a television comedy series, the cigar-smoking Burns plays straight man to dizzy wife Gracie Allen, who invariably embroils him -- and their neighbors Blanche and Harry Morton -- in her zany domestic schemes. Burns also appears as commentator on the action, confiding philosophically to the audience about Gracie's madcap intrigues and predicting their outcome. In this episode, George gets an invitation to lecture at UCLA on the subject of television. The Mortons and announcer Harry Von Zell find it hilarious that anyone would actually hire George for his views, and when he hears them laughing he loses his confidence and refuses to lecture after all. Consequently, Gracie visits a personality consultant to see what she can do to bolster George's self-esteem, and the consultant suggests that George could be helped by associating with people outside of show business. Gracie misconstrues this and invites a lawyer and bricklayer over to chat about their professions while George listens. Finally, a representative of the university calls to tell George that what the school really wants him to do is convince some of his celebrity friends to lecture instead of having him make an appearance at the school himself.
