WALK THROUGH THE 20TH CENTURY WITH BILL MOYERS, A: OUT OF THE DEPTHS: THE MINER'S STORY (TV)

Summary

One in this 19-part documentary series that explores the major events and personalities that have shaped 20th-century America. Host Bill Moyers imparts a personal journalistic vision to the programs, which emphasize the political, social, and military history of the United States. In this program, Moyers recounts the history and experiences of workers at the Colorado Fuel and Iron Mine during the early 1900s. He interviews retired mineworkers who comment about the hazardous working conditions at the mine, the formation of unions, and the violence. Among the former mineworkers interviewed are William Henry Lloyd, Alex Bisulco, James Diamanti, Martha Todd, Alfred Owens, Lawrence and Claude Amicarella, Earl Stucker, Mae and Nick Bikakis, Thomas Biggs, Jr., Barron B. Beshoar, John Valdez, Kate Livoda, Steve Surisky, Jack and Shine Miller, Mike Livoda, Frank Harenburg, Caroline and John Tomsic, Donald Mitchell, and Dan DeSantis. Archival footage and photographs are used throughout the program, which also includes readings by Oscar Brand and Janice Mattson of excerpts from "Out of the Depths," written by Barron B. Beshoar.
