HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS. CRAIG (TV)

Summary

This documentary examines the life of Lula Sadler Craig on the occasion of her 102nd birthday. Craig's great-great-granddaughter narrates the history of this alert, articulate retired schoolteacher who was born the child of slaves. Craig offers reminiscences of her family's exodus from the South after the Civil War to Nicodemus, a settlement in Kansas for former slaves, as well as their subsequent move to Colorado, where they were among the first settlers in the region. Craig's astonishing childhood memories include her father voting for President Ulysses S. Grant's second term and her friendship with schoolmate George Washington Carver. Five generations of Craig's family gather from places across the United States for the matriarch's massive birthday celebration, and they display a richly varied set of attitudes and experiences, speaking on such issues as the Black Panthers, the Vietnam War, and the progress of African-Americans in the last century. They all share a sense of family pride and perseverance, as exemplified by the 102-year-old Lula, who greets them all warmly by name.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, 1997.
