WHY, CHARLIE BROWN, WHY? (TV)
Summary
In this animation special, Linus asks Charlie Brown "why?" when he learns that his close friend, Janice, has leukemia. One day at school, Janice notices that she is bruising quite easily and feels as though she has a fever. Three days later, Linus and Charlie Brown learn that she is in the hospital. From her hospital bed, Janice informs them that she has cancer. She also explains how the doctors came to that conclusion and tells them about the treatments she will undergo so that she will get better and be able to return to school. Linus returns home where he tells his sister, Lucy, about Janice's plight. He also relates information about cancer, including the fact that it is not contagious and that Janice is not to blame for having it. When Janice finally returns to school, Linus finds himself defending her in the schoolyard when a boy picks on her because she is bald. At Christmas time, Linus delivers a present to Janice's home where he meets her sisters. Here he learns that leukemia does not only affect the individual who has the illness, but also those close to him or her as well. Commercials deleted.
