MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: WILLIAM S. PALEY TELEVISION FESTIVAL 2002: SCRUBS {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This evening honors "Scrubs," a half-hour comedy series about hospital intern J.D. Dorian, his peers, and the doctors and nurses with whom they work. Museum television curator Ron Simon moderates. Simon opens the evening by describing "Scrubs" and the critical acclaim it has received. He introduces the panelists: cast members Judy Reyes, John C. McGinley, Ken Jenkins, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, and Zach Braff and creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence. Lawrence introduces the two episodes to be screened, "My Old Lady" and "My Balancing Act." After the screening, Lawrence recalls the genesis of the idea for "Scrubs." He explains that the medical situations on the program are taken from real-life stories of doctors he knows. As the panelists continue their discussion, they covering the following topics, among others: the actors' experience on the show and its departures from other work they have done; the experience of working on a single-camera comedy; the production of "Scrubs" and its work schedule; the intensive casting process the actors underwent; and the freedom accorded to the production by the network. Simon opens the seminar to questions, and the panelists discuss the following topics, among others: the development of McGinley's character; Chalke's feelings about her character's name; the reasoning behind the brief romance between J.D. and Elliott; the influence of the book "The House of God" on Lawrence; the stunts on the program; the planning of the janitor character; the concept of the show as journal entries by J.D.; Reyes's role as the strong-willed nurse; the future of "Scrubs"; the extent to which the actors resemble their characters; and the qualities in their characters they envy.

(This tape includes the "Scrubs" episodes "My Old Lady" and "My Balancing Act." These episodes are part of the Museum's collection and may be viewed separately. See T:69036 and T:69103, respectively, for summaries.)
