WOMAN ON THE RUN: THE LAWRENCIA BEMBENEK STORY {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

Part one of two in this drama based on the autobiography of discharged Milwaukee police officer Lawrencia Bembenek, focusing on the events surrounding the murder of Christine Schultz. In part one, Lawrencia "Laurie" Bembenek, an ex-cop in her twenties, comes across pictures of a group of police officers appearing naked in a public park. Laurie, who was dismissed from the force because she allegedly used drugs at a rock concert, decides to bring a lawsuit against the Milwaukee Police Department because she doesn't think it fair that the men involved in the public display weren't arrested or rebuked. After her accusations become public, Laurie meets and falls in love with Fred Schultz, a recently-divorced police officer. She also becomes the victim of a series of phone calls and pranks perpetrated by Schultz's male colleagues. Despite the flak he receives from the men in his department, Schultz insists he is in love with Laurie, and the two get married after two months together. Laurie soon becomes entangled in Fred's financial conflicts with his ex-wife Christine, and when Christine is shot dead in her home, Laurie becomes the prime suspect. The police produce evidence which implicates Laurie in the crime, most notably access to the murder weapon, Fred's gun. Laurie's attorney learns from one of his private investigators that Fred had hired a hitman to kill his wife, but Laurie refuses to believe it. However, when Fred finally gets to testify and -- Laurie hopes -- help exonerate her, he claims immunity, which protects him from ever being tried for Christine's murder. Laurie and her lawyer fear that his testimony will now significantly damage her defense.
