HURRICANE ANDREW: AS IT HAPPENED (TV)

Summary

This home video documentary, hosted by meteorologist Bryan Norcross, presents edited footage of WTVJ-TV's original live coverage of the Hurricane Andrew disaster in south Florida on August 24, 1992 and the week that followed. Coverage highlights include the following: Norcross tracks what was a tropical storm on August 18th; interviews with locals before the storm, some of whom prepare to evacuate while others stock up on supplies in order to brave out the hurricane at home; "hurricane watch" reports from Dr. Bob Sheets at the National Hurricane Center; Andrew's arrival in Miami around midnight on the 24th; Norcross and WTVJ reporters in various locations describe the storm as it hits; early morning pictures of the massive damage to the Dade County area; reporter Ileana Bravo interviews victims at the emergency ward of Baptist Hospital; a look at the tremendous traffic jams occurring as evacuated people try to return to their homes; reporters talk with residents as they search through their levelled homes for salvageable belongings; President George Bush arrives at Opa-Locka Airport to assess the damage and offer support; looters begin to pillage stores and private homes; a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew is announced for all of Dade County; fights break out as people wait in long lines for water; residents line up to make insurance claims; interviews with angry apartment dwellers whose landlord is demanding rent for uninhabitable apartments; Dr. Roy Alson of the National Disaster Team discusses hurricane-related deaths now occurring due to heat stress and cardiac arrest; a look at a band of escaped monkeys in Homestead who have been ordered shot because they may be carrying disease; post-hurricane rains cause flooding and further destruction of goods in roofless houses and stores; neighbors share resources and people arrive from other areas to donate food, clothing and medical assistance for those in need; news of the crash of a private relief flight on its way to Homestead; storm victims express growing frustration and anger over a perceived lack of federal response; the arrival of army kitchen trailers and a supply ship; the various landmarks, museums, and zoos that suffered damage; and finally, Norcross evaluates what was learned from Hurricane Andrew.
