GOVERNOR & J.J., THE {THE GOVERNOR AND JJ}: CHECK THE CHECK (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Governor William Drinkwater and his efficient "first lady," his daughter J.J.
in this episode, J.J. adds up their recent campaign contributions and comes across a check for a whopping $100,000 from a "J.D. McCumber." Though at first believing it to be a prank, J.J., Maggie, and George attempt to determine its authenticity by calling every McCumber in the phone book, with no useful results. J.J. opts to simply accept their good luck and deposit the check on Monday morning. However, her father insists on a thorough investigation into the apparently generous donor. As George steels his nerves to get on a plane with his boss, Maggie and J.J. decide to contact Harbach & Son, a father-son private investigator team that does not require payment until the job is successfully completed.
The Harbachs' squabbles are interrupted when J.J. arrives at their office with the check, and they vow to unearth the mysterious McCumber within days. Mr. Harbach Sr. comes up with no answers, and J.J. rips up the check in frustration when his son Buddy announces that there is no such person as J.D. McCumber. He explains that she is now known as Joan Darlene Delaney. Alarmed, J.J. hurries to the widow Delaney's stately home and thanks her for the donation, awkwardly admitting that they tracked her down via investigator. Joan relates that she finds Governor Drinkwater to be "honest," and agrees to write another check when J.J. admits that the first one suffered "an accident."
Returning home, J.J. happily explains the mix-up to her father – but then receives another call from Mr. Harbach Sr., who reveals that Joan's mansion, Harbor Hill House, is a well-known "house of ill repute." The governor visits Joan and politely returns her check, despite her assurances that the money comes from her inheritance and not from her ongoing activities; she agrees to support him with just her vote. Back at home, J.J. learns that Buddy has bravely volunteered to go "undercover" at Harbor Hill House. Commercials deleted.
