Summary
One in this drama series about a Washington D.C.-based team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
In this episode, Jethro and his squad report to the scene of Norfolk naval officer Joseph Norton's death. There, Jethro is shocked to find that the witness to the murder -- Joseph's fiancee -- is Joann Fielding, his former mother-in-law. Back at headquarters, Ziva, Tim and Tony exchange gossip about Jethro and Joann not having seen each other since Shannon and Kelly's deaths. Later, Jethro interrogates Joann about Joseph's murder, though she provides little useful information. Afterward, Leon threatens to take Jethro off the case if his judgments become questionable. When Phil questions Joann's truthfulness about the murder details, Jethro realizes that she gave a false description to the sketch artist. Worse, Abby finds forensic evidence proving that Joann was lying about where she was during the struggle. In the meantime, the team learns that Joseph had a long history of taking payments from Mexican drug cartels.
Jethro tells Joann that her story doesn't add up, and that Joseph was part of the same cartel that killed Shannon and Kelly. When Tony and Ziva go to Arizona to see the retired cop that Joann hired to help her, they find his corpse, tied up in his home by cartel members. After Joann refuses to let Jethro help her, he asks Allison to take her case, pro bono. Jethro next talks to Lt. David Shankton, who turns out to be the owner of the gun that killed Joseph. The lieutenant says that he's being framed. Later, Leon and Phil tell Jethro that Joann is setting up David. Ducky then explains how evidence indicates that Joann fired the gun that killed Joseph.
Over Allison's objections, Jethro informs Joann that he knows she murdered Joseph. Jethro then reveals how he secretly shot the cartel agent that killed Shannon and Kelly, motivating Joann to confess. When Jethro subsequently arrests Joann without reading her rights, Allison points out the legal mistake Jethro "accidentally" committed. Allison tells him that Joann must be released, fully realizing that Jethro just "won." Later that night, Jethro tells the team that David has been identified as a drug cartel member and was arrested. With a nod of approval to Jethro, Leon confirms that Joann is no longer "a person of interest." Commercials deleted.
