VIEW, THE {KRISTIN CHENOWETH; SEAN HAYES; MARGARET CHO; BROOKE ELLIOTT} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of daytime talk shows hosted by a multi-generational group of women, including actress Whoopi Goldberg, comedian Sherri Shepherd and comedian Joy Behar. In this edition, journalist Ashleigh Banfield joins the panel as a guest host.
The hosts open the program by discussing how Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga was "robbed" of what would have been the Major League's 21st-ever perfect game by an incorrect call from umpire Jim Joyce; the manhunt for Joran van der Sloot, the Dutch national previously investigated for the 2005 disappearance and presumed death of American teenager Natalee Holloway, who is now wanted for the murder of a Peruvian woman, Stephany Flores; the BP oil spill and whether President Barack Obama should "go off" and express uncharacteristic anger over the issue; the strange 911 call made by Shannon Price, ex-wife of former child star Gary Coleman, prior to his May 2010 death from a fall; a French McDonald's TV spot featuring a dad who is unaware of his teen son's romance with another boy; Debrahlee Lorenzana's lawsuit against Citibank on the grounds that she was fired for being "too attractive"; the knighting of British actor Patrick Stewart; and the upcoming NBA Finals between longtime rivals the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers.
The first guests, actors Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth, then join the hosts to discuss their roles in the Broadway musical "Promises, Promises"; a backstage snack from Goldberg; Hayes' Tony Awards double duty as both nominee and host; journalist Ramin Setoodeh's controversial comment that Hayes could not convincingly play a heterosexual role, and why Chenoweth opted to publicly defend her co-star; Chenoweth's role as the outrageous April Rhodes on "Glee," and how the show helps to promote school choir as an exciting pastime; and Hayes' role as executive producer on the comedy series "Hot in Cleveland," and the importance of the show's focus on the lives of middle-aged women. A clip is also shown from "Promises, Promises."
Goldberg pays tribute to "The Golden Girls" star Rue McClanahan, who passed away earlier in the day. Next, Margaret Cho and Brooke Elliott of the comedy-drama series "Drop Dead Diva" join the hosts. Cho recalls fond memories of working with McClanahan on "The Golden Palace," the spin-off of "Girls"; Elliott then offers thoughts on her "Diva" character Jane's entanglement in a love triangle. Cho and Elliott weigh in on a memorable musical scene with Paula Abdul, and how the show seeks to comment on Hollywood's obsession with weight and unrealistic beauty standards. A clip from "Diva" is also shown.
Finally, Hayes and Chenoweth perform "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" from "Promises, Promises." Includes commercials and promos.
