WOMEN'S VOICES FROM THE MUSLIM WORLD {SCREENING PACKAGE}

Summary

A compilation of six short films about women’s rights in the Muslim world. The first film is entitled “Somaye,” a short experimental film representing the metaphorical inner struggle of a Muslim woman. The second film is “Feminin Masculin,” a short documentary about the challenges faced by a female bus driver in Iran. Women drivers are generally looked down upon in Iran, and the bus passengers have mixed reactions to the advent of a female bus driver; some believe that it is a step towards equality while others are uncomfortable with the change. The woman’s son is opposed to it, preferring that she remain at home. Despite all this, she perseveres and believes that the discrimination will relent in time. The third film is “In the Morning,” a drama based on an “honor killing” that took place in 2003. A young woman is raped in an alleyway and two months later, her family seeks to end their suffering. They instruct Baran, the woman’s younger brother, to carry out their vengeance and arm him with a gun. However, it is not the rapist that is murdered, but the young woman; killed to preserve the “honor” of her family. The fourth film is “Sunglasses,” a short drama about a woman attempting to step out from beneath her chadri, and walk without being veiled. Despite her efforts, she is forced back into hiding beneath her coverings. The fifth film is “The Unveiled,” a short documentary detailing opinions about the practice of veiling women’s faces in Muslim countries and how it relates to Islam as a whole. The final film is “Jazbaa: A Strong Will,” a short documentary about a female cab driver in India and how her community feels about her position. Manju Khatri was inspired to take up her job after hearing about another woman in a similar situation. She faces some discrimination from men, but many people applaud her decision, such as her fellow cab drivers and the children she drives to school each morning.
