VINCENT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere episode of this British drama series about policeman-turned-private-investigator Vincent Gallagher and his team of detectives. In this episode, Vincent avoids his estranged wife Cathy as he goes out on a job with his co-worker Beth, spying on a woman named Sarah de Silva at the behest of her husband, Gary. Though she claims to be going swimming, Sarah instead goes clubbing with another man, and Vincent calls Gary to confirm that she is indeed cheating on him. Gary asks to speak to Sarah, and though Beth discourages it, Vincent confronts Sarah and her lover and nearly gets into a fight with the man. Beth chides him for allowing his personal feelings to get involved, as his own wife left him for another man, DCI David Driscoll. At home, Cathy and Vincent argue about their apartment, and she leaves despite his request that she stay with him. The next day, the team works on other cases, though Beth is still clearly annoyed about Vincent's actions. John flirts with Gillian, and Vincent goes to Gary's home to pick up his surveillance gear. Gary, acting nervous, says that Vincent is "lucky" not to have a love life, and he pays him. As John surveils another house, he gets a text message from Gillian saying that she "wants" him, and elsewhere, Gillian admits to Beth that she would like to do field work, but cannot maintain the odd hours because of her young daughter, Justine.
Vincent breaks into Cathy and David's home and plants listening devices, then receiving the same text from Gillian. Back at work, he tells young Robert to take notes on the tapes from the de Silvas' home, and confronts Gillian about the message, which contains a semi-naked picture of her. Highly embarrassed, Gillian swears that she did not send it, but Robert interrupts and bids Vincent to listen to the tape, on which a very violent fight between Gary and Sarah can be heard. Worried, Vincent and Robert rush to the de Silvas' home and find Gary gone and Sarah badly beaten but still alive. When the ambulance arrives, Vincent orders Robert to keep an eye on the house and talks to the police, who criticize him for his work and for taking Gary's "blood money." John receives the photo of Gillian as well, and she asks him to erase it. Vincent prints out images of Sarah's phone book and attempts to track down Gary, arguing with Beth about his culpability in Gary's outburst and admitting that he "can't walk away" now that Sarah has been hurt. Cathy arrives and confronts Vincent about breaking into her home, and they fight about their recent breakup as the others listen uncomfortably. Vincent receives another message from Gillian's number and she explains to him that she recently had a one-night stand with a friend of her ex-boyfriend's, Keiron, and that he must have taken the picture and tapped into her phone to send it, and Vincent promises to help her.
Gary calls Vincent and asks about Sarah, but hangs up before revealing his whereabouts. Vincent tracks down Keiron, and Gillian's ex Andrew receives a tape of Keiron confessing to sending the messages, saying he must contact Gillian or the police will see the tape. Vincent eavesdrops on Cathy and David, and Beth reports that Sarah is doing "so-so." Gary calls again and blames Vincent for his attack on Sarah, revealing that he has beaten her before. Cathy realizes that Vincent has bugged the house, but he arrives and admits it, and David threatens him. Vincent asks Cathy why she left him, and she firmly states that she loves David. Vincent next visits Andrew with John and Gillian, and he refuses to give in to Vincent's threats, demanding to be allowed to see Justine. Sarah soon dies at the hospital, and Robert, still monitoring the de Silva home, sees movement within. Vincent arrives with the others, and he goes into the house to search, calling out that Sarah has died. Gary lowers a ladder and Vincent joins him in the attic, and Gary says that Vincent should have lied to him about Sarah's affair before starting a fire and attempting to kill them both. The others quickly call the authorities, and despite his anger, Vincent saves Gary by crashing through the floor with him, and he is then arrested. Shaken but unhurt, Vincent heads out for a meal with the rest of his team. Commercials deleted.
