PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: INSIDE MEDIA: AN EVENING WITH SYFY'S BEING HUMAN {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar honors "Being Human," the drama/fantasy series based on the British program of the same name about three twentysomething Boston roommates: a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost.

Host Rene Reyes (director of public programs and festivals, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing moderator Nadira Hira (journalist, Fortune magazine). She brings Mark Stern (president of original programming, SyFy Channel) to the stage to introduce the third season premiere episode, "It's a Shame About Ray," which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 109945.)

After the screening, Hira moderates the following panelists: executive producer Anna Fricke; and cast members Kristen Hager (Nora Sergeant), Sam Huntington (Josh Levinson), Meaghan Rath (Sally Malik), and Sam Witwer (Aidan Waite).

The panelists touch on such topics as: why the third season has been the most rewarding for them; the show as the "most grounded" of the many current supernaturally-themed programs; Fricke's experience as solo showrunner following the departure of husband Jeremy Carver, who now runs "Supernatural"; the importance of the chemistry between the characters; the fifteen-month gap in the story between seasons two and three; the theme of "be careful what you wish for"; ghost Sally's "amazing" return to life in the premiere; Josh as the "papa bear" and his sense of responsibility for the other characters; Hager's joy in joining the cast full-time; the actors' ability to balance antics with work duties; favorite moments from filming; upcoming guest stars, including Xander Berkeley and Katherine Isabelle; the importance of the show's music and the work of composer FM Le Sieur; the balance of humanity and supernatural elements within the plots; hints about an upcoming episode featuring their "most ambitious flashback" yet; and how the writers are sticking to the "Bishop model" from the first season, in which James Bishop (Mark Pellegrino) served as a formidable yet relatable villain. Hira then asks a series of questions in "lightning round" style, inquiring about the panelists' guilty pleasures, memorable fan moments, and most anticipated elements of season three.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: clarification about the ghosts "within" Sally and whether she has clean blood; the decision to break away from voiceover narrations; the cast members' favorite storylines aside from their own; the differences and occasional "unintentional crossovers" between the British and American versions of the show; the actors' most challenging scenes and stunts; ideas for guest appearances from the cast members' former co-stars; and an onscreen appearance by Rath's real-life sibling as Sally's brother. The panelists close the evening by posing a series of trivia questions to fans in the audience.
