BOARDWALK EMPIRE: HOME (TV)
Summary
One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, in Chicago, Al updates Jimmy on the whereabouts of Liam, the hood who attacked Pearl. Jimmy later visits a veterans' hospital, seeking treatment for the pain in his leg, and spots a fellow soldier with severe facial injuries. Elderly Ethan Thompson is injured in his rundown home and Nucky arrives to find Eli already there and tending to him. Nucky ignores Eli's questions about his relationship with Margaret, whose husband they had killed, and suggests that they should sell their old childhood home. Elsewhere, Chalky is approached by a courteous young man calling himself "Michael Lewis" who requests to buy alcohol directly from Chalky, but Chalky perceives it as a test from Nucky and refuses him. Nucky decides to give his father's old home to loyal Ward Boss Damien Fleming, though seems saddened by his story about his newborn child, and tells him to have the place fixed up for his family. They are interrupted by Lucy, however, upset and jealous over Nucky's affair with Margaret.
Margaret talks to Harry Prince's mistress Annabelle about their respective relationships, and Margaret seems taken aback when Annabelle suggests stealing money from Nucky. Margaret declares that she is "fond" of him, but guesses that he is still in love with his late wife Mabel, and Annabelle cautions her against letting him be too emotionally vulnerable with her. Luciano and "Lewis," revealed to be Meyer Lansky, meet up with Mickey Doyle and the D'Alessio brothers and suggest that they rob Nucky's casino to fund their next bootlegging venture, though half of the money will go to Rothstein. Van Alden and Sebso question Billy Winslow, who, facing a long jail sentence for other crimes, confesses that he was the decoy in the woods robbery and names Jimmy and Al as the culprits. At the hospital, Jimmy talks to the masked soldier, who introduces himself as Richard Harrow and explains that he was a marksman in the war. He frets about the "nutcase test" that the veterans are now taking, and Jimmy urges him to "try lying" and they leave together without being interviewed. Back in Atlantic City, Angela is revealed to be having an affair with Mary, the photographer's wife, though she worries that Nucky knows and wonders why Jimmy has not sent money, as promised, unaware that Van Alden has been intercepting his letters.
Nucky takes Margaret to his childhood home, now being renovated for the Flemings, and though she deems it "cozy," he confides in her about Ethan's abusive nature and she hastily urges him to forget the past. Jimmy takes Richard back to the brothel, where he nervously rambles about weaponry, clearly deeply emotionally affected by the war as well. Jimmy summons Odette, asking her to show the shy Richard her patriotic "gratitude." Nucky visits Chalky's club with Margaret, Prince and Annabelle, confused by Chalky's accusations about Lansky. The Commodore's mysterious illness worsens and he gripes to Louanne that he is dying, and at Margaret's gentle urging, Nucky opens up to her about a grim childhood moment in which Ethan forced him into a violent fight. Jimmy tracks down Liam and tells him a chilling story about the "living, waking nightmare" of the war, and Richard then kills him with a well-placed sniper shot. A lonely Lucy visits the pictures, and Nucky visits the now-finished house, where Ethan coldly tells him that he is not a "king" at all. Overcome by his bad memories of the home, Nucky burns it down, giving the shocked Fleming money for a "better place."
