30 ROCK: LIVE FROM STUDIO 6H {WEST COAST VERSION} (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the cast and production team of a sketch comedy television show. In this episode, shot and aired live on the West Coast, Jack informs Liz that "TGS" will no longer be aired live, as it is cheaper to pre-record it. She points out that live television has an incomparable spontaneity, as proven by the sudden appearance of Paul McCartney, though she is swayed by Jack's promise of a two-weeks-per-year work schedule. Jenna sings the opening theme and then announces to an annoyed Liz that she intends to get engaged to Paul on air during the final live show, and Kenneth locks everyone in during a meeting, determined that "TGS" will stay live. He reminds them all of the original live NBC sitcom "The Lovebirds," which featured a spiteful and surprisingly violent married couple. Jenna is upset when Paul tells her that he does not want to propose publicly and threatens him with an ultimatum, while elsewhere Kenneth continues listing NBC's memorable live programs, including "The Joey Montero Show," which featured a boorish host and musical guest Dusty Springfield, the wildly offensive "Alfie and Abner," which featured the network's sole black actor and a white actor in blackface as squabbling brothers, and the '60s-style variety show "The Gruber Brother and Nipsey," which was interrupted by two highly sexist anchors' news report on the Apollo 13 disaster.

Paul disappears and Hazel offers to propose to Jenna on-air, pointing out that it will draw just as much attention. Tracy realizes that he landed his "big break" and discovered his talent for ridiculous comedy while performing in a live NBC telethon, and Liz and Jack realize that they too were involved in the event and found their "calling" thanks to the magic of live TV. Everyone agrees that "TGS" should indeed stay live, and as they begin a "Prince William and Prince" sketch, Paul arrives on the set and proposes to Jenna after all, though she refuses, not wanting to reduce their relationship to a ratings ploy. Hazel attempts to get "discovered" with a different dramatic stunt, and Liz runs off with Paul McCartney as Jack plants a kiss on Pete. Commercials deleted.
