FAERIE TALE THEATRE: SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of whimsical adaptations fairy tales hosted by Shelley Duvall. This episode tells the story of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." The title heroine (played by Elizabeth McGovern) lives with her stepmother, the Queen, who is jealous of her stepdaughter's beauty. One day, the Queen orders her huntsman to take Snow White into the forest and kill her. However, the huntsman cannot bring himself to take the girl's life. Instead, he warns her never to return to the castle, so Snow White runs off into the forest to hide. There she meets seven dwarfs who become her friends. When the queen learns that Snow White is still alive, she sets out to kill her herself. She uses magic to turn herself into an old lady and ventures into the forest. When she finally comes upon Snow White she strangles her with ribbons. When the dwarfs return home from work they discover Snow White's body and remove the ribbons, whereupon the girl wakes up. Back at the castle, the Queen is dismayed to learn that her stepdaughter is still alive, so she once again diguises herself and brings Snow White a poison apple. Snow White eats it and collapses. Again, the dwarfs find her body. Since they cannot bring themselves to bury her, they make her a coffin out of glass and start to take her to the highest hill in the forest. Along the way they meet their friend, the prince, and -- magically -- Snow White awakens. The prince and Snow White fall in love and get married, and the Queen receives a fitting punishment for her crimes.
