Summary
This program presents a portion of coverage of the 2000 summer Games of the XXVII Olympiad from Sydney. Highlights of this portion include coverage of the following events and topics: Anchor sports commentators Bob Costas and Katie Couric preside throughout this portion and introduce various events and highlights. Costas and Couric profile Margo Dydek (Poland), who at 7'2" is the tallest woman competing in Sydney, as well as Andrzej Wronski (Poland) who carries the Polish flag. John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John perform. Governor General of Australia Sir William Deane, declares the Sydney Olympic Games open. Vanessa Amorosi sings "Heroes Live Forever.” The Millennium Choir of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia sings the Olympic Hymn. Hockey player Rechelle Hawkes (Australia) recites the Olympic Oath. Costas and Couric highlight former Olympic athletes Betty Cuthbert and Raelene Boyle, who are the first to enter the stadium with the Olympic torch. Former Olympic swimmer Dawn Fraser is next to take the torch; former Olympic runner Shirley de la Hunty takes the torch next and hands it to former Olympic swimmer Shane Gould. Former Olympic hurdler Debbie Flintoff-King receives the torch and passes it to sprinter Cathy Freeman (Australia), who lights the Olympic cauldron.
