SONS AND DAUGHTERS: NOSE TO NOSE {UNAIRED EPISODE} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy-drama series about the misadventures of the blended Lincoln-Hammersmith family. In this unaired episode, Spud appears on a local talk show and argues heatedly with another youth coach who claims that he is turning his athletes into "wimps," and Tess is embarrassed to spot her ex-flame Michael in the audience. At the country club, Bing runs into his former co-worker, Shelly, and ends up playing an overly-competitive game of tennis with Gary. Tess and Michael agree to try dating again, and Spud is shocked when the station manager offers him a high-paying job as the moderator of a new program, explaining that his dramatic appearance gained high ratings. The show, "Nose to Nose," turns out to be a sensationalist talk show in which guests are goaded into fighting with one another for personal reasons. Gary is upset to learn that Bing, bored with retirement, has agreed to return to the firm in an advisory position, meaning that he is now his son's boss. Spud's family is thrilled with his considerable salary and mounting fame, though Spud appears embarrassed when they all sit down to watch the trashy show together.
Michael assures Tess that he is now ready for a serious relationship despite his non-committal behavior in the past, though their date is interrupted by several phone calls from Astrid. Bing and Gary begin arguing at work, with Gary growing increasingly resentful of his "maniac" father's micro-managing and demanding nature, and Astrid seems suspicious when Tess encourages her to spend the evening with Hank while she goes out with Michael again. Gary finishes a complex report and sends it off to Shelly, though Bing secretly intercepts it, and Spud tries to enjoy his new celebrity status while dining out with the family. Gary complains to Lindy about Bing, though she forces him to admit that he actually enjoys working alongside his father, and he adds that he desperately wants Shelly's approval at work. Tess and Michael end up in bed together, though Tess rushes out when Astrid calls again and claims to be seriously ill. Michael suggests that Astrid is merely feeling insecure about her mother's evolving personal life and is seeking her attention, and this is proven to be accurate when Tess returns home and finds a perfectly-well Astrid waiting for her. After firmly assuring her daughter that she will never grow to love Michael, or any man, "more" than she loves her daughter, she heads back out to finish her date.
Spud ponders the true meaning of "success," wondering if his high salary makes up for his sense of being a "clown" on the show, and Gary is upset to find that Bing doctored his report before sending it to Shelly. Bing protests that he merely wants his son to be the best, but Gary argues that he is far too competitive and re-joined the firm to prove that he is still a capable businessman, not simply to "help out." Realizing that the time has come for him to truly step aside, Bing decides to retire for good and allow his son to forge his own career path. Spud quits "Nose to Nose," feeling that the money is not worth his dignity, and everyone – except for Rocky – applauds his decision. Later, Bing visits Gary and offers him some useful business contacts and notes, though he makes sure to remind his son that he loves him as well. Commercials deleted
