MURPHY BROWN: ALTERED STATES {EIGHTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The eighth season premiere in this comedy series about Murphy Brown, a high-profile, successful broadcast newswoman, and her colleagues at the news magazine “FYI.” In this episode, Murphy is annoyed when no one is at all surprised by the cancellation of her wedding to Peter. Corky and Miles, however, shock everyone by excitedly revealing that they impulsively married after Peter's bachelor party, though Murphy and the others agree that it cannot possibly last. Murphy is then surprised by a visit from John F. Kennedy Jr., who offers her a less-than-thrilling wedding present. Corky and Miles invite everyone to an impromptu party celebrating their marriage, though they take offense when Murphy voices her skepticism, feeling that she is "raining on their parade" because of her own failed engagement. When she points out that they all have their doubts, Frank, Phil and Jim all quickly pretend that they disagree with her as they feign excitement for the newlyweds.
At the party, Murphy talks to Buddy, who realizes that he has failed to use his position as bartender to intervene in many doomed marriages over the years. Murphy apologizes to Corky, but Corky reveals that she and Miles have not even been intimate yet and begins to panic that she has made a terrible mistake. Miles soon admits that he feels the same way and they sadly ponder divorce, but then decide that they enjoy each other's company too much to permanently split. Murphy smugly tells everyone present that she was right and that the marriage is already dissolving, but she is frustrated anew when Corky and Miles reveal that they are going to stay together for the time being. Left alone after the party, Murphy and Frank wonder if they are not destined for marriage after all, though Frank reminds his best friend that they have considered marrying each other if left with no other options. Commercials deleted.
