EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS: EVERYBODY HATES FUNERALS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series that takes place in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in 1982, the year Chris Rock turned 13. In this episode, Chris' frequently-annoyed mother Rochelle is thrilled by a visit from her wisecracking father Gene, though the family is then shocked when Gene drops dead at the dinner table. Instead of openly grieving, Rochelle reacts with uncharacteristic sweetness, and Chris confides in Greg that he is alarmed by her strange behavior. Chris' schoolteacher releases him from class once she is convinced of the news, and Chris' various relatives, including his hyper-critical grandmother Maxine and his eccentric aunts, soon arrive for the funeral. The house begins to "fall apart" without Rochelle's usual strictness, and Chris attempts to comfort his mother by taking charge and ordering his siblings around. He soon snaps at Maxine for giving Rochelle a hard time, however, and Julius advises him to apologize for his outburst and stay out of the conflict.
At the funeral home, the family begins to argue when Maxine selects an expensive casket, wanting to bury her husband with "dignity." Back at home, Rochelle "talks" with her father, who advises her to not to let her mother push her around. The family piles into a limo to travel to the funeral, first ousting a trio of stowaways, and a large number of guests, including Greg and a few neighborhood strangers, later arrive at the house for the reception. Rochelle finally stands up to her mother and her other wacky relatives, and though mother and daughter exchange a relatively unemotional goodbye, Chris hears the heartfelt message behind the words, relieved that his mother has returned to her no-nonsense ways. Commercials deleted.
