Summary
A television special honoring the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast of the acclaimed sitcom “I Love Lucy.”
Highlights include: an introduction by Whoopi Goldberg; footage of Desi Arnaz introducing “I Love Lucy” co-stars Vivian Vance, William Frawley, and Lucille Ball; footage from the original unaired pilot of “I Love Lucy”; a countdown of the top ten “I Love Lucy” episodes as chosen by voters on the CBS website; Dick Van Dyke, Richard Crenna, Bruce Vilanch, Larry King, Cher, Roseanne, Paul Rodriguez, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lily Tomlin, and “I Love Lucy” writers Madeline Pugh Davis, Bob Carroll Jr., and Bob Schiller discussing the comedy dynamics of the show and the interactions between its four main characters; a segment featuring Lucie Arnaz taking her brother Desi Arnaz Jr. and his family on a tour of Ball’s birthplace, Jamestown, New York, including the house where she grew up; further commentary on the show from Leah Remini, Andy Garcia, Henry Winkler, and Lucille Ball fan club president Tom Watson; a segment on the production staff of “I Love Lucy,” including the writers, the camera crew, editors, and production; a segment on the numerous celebrity cameos on “I Love Lucy”; a performance of “Patria” by Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.; a segment about Desi Arnaz’s upbringing and family in Cuba, as well as his influence on music in America, including commentary by Rodriguez, Garcia, Alex Abella, Antonio Banderas, Jorge Moreno; Moreno performing “Babalu” as an homage to Desi Arnaz, accompanied by Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr.; the circumstances surrounding the show depicting Lucy as pregnant as a means of coinciding with Ball’s real-life pregnancy; and a segment on the enduring legacy of “I Love Lucy” and the tremendous amount of merchandise and memorabilia it has inspired.
