HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER: WE'RE GOOD PEOPLE NOW {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The third season premiere in this series of legal dramas about a hard-nosed Philadelphia law professor who recruits her students to work in her firm – leading to their entanglement in a variety of ethically questionable schemes.

In this episode, a stunned Wes is questioned by police about Wallace Mahoney's murder. Annalise tells Wes that Frank, who has changed his appearance and fled, likely committed the act out of a warped sense of penance toward her. Four months later, classmate Simon Drake drops snide hints about class rankings as the students return to school. Annalise announces that they will be competing to take charge on a case for their new pro bono legal clinic. She ignores flyers posted around the school labeling her a "killer," assuring the Keating Five that they're "good people now." She introduces the case of Karim Assaf, an Iraqi immigrant facing deportation over a small amount of marijuana. Though Laurel proves that Karim is actually covering for his daughter Faiza, Annalise selects Wes and Simon to assemble his defense, based mainly on character witnesses.

In the recent past, Laurel assures a skeptical Annalise that the missing Frank is "dead to her." Connor asks Annalise to refuse Oliver's job request, as associating with them would surely "ruin him." Oliver confesses to deleting Connor's Stanford acceptance, however, and Annalise reconsiders his usefulness. Nate is upset to learn about the "killer" signs. Over the summer, Annalise laughs off Asher's request for a loan, now that he is estranged from his rich mom, forcing him to take a job as a college T.A. Michaela continues her secret affair with Asher and sneaks a peek at his notes on the Karim case; she soon interrupts Wes' proceedings to explain that Karim's public defender didn't adequately warn him about the danger of deportation with a guilty plea. When the judge refuses to dismiss the case, Annalise tries to bargain for reduced charges, meaning that he can stay in the U.S. Wes stalls for time by calling a parade of witnesses to describe Karim's upstanding position in the community.

Annalise informs Connor that she's hiring Oliver after all. Over the summer, she helps a distraught Michaela out of a drunk-driving charge, pointing out that she wasn't "normal" even before all of her law school-related entanglements. Wes is crushed when the judge rejects the reduced charge and orders Karim deported. When Connor immediately forgives Oliver for sabotaging his transfer plans, Oliver realizes that their relationship is "not healthy" and sadly breaks up with him. Another flashback reveals that Annalise came up with the legal clinic idea in a frantic attempt to save her job after learning that the Keating Five have fallen to the bottom 10 percent of their class. When Bonnie questions Annalise about the "killer" signs and about Frank's fate, she sighs that it's "all Sam's fault." Wes admits to a heartbroken Laurel that he has distanced himself from her because he can't help but associate her with Frank. Laurel tries to hide her grief as she meets his new flame, Meggy Travers. Annalise contacts her secret operative, who reveals that he has located Frank — but Frank then finds him as well. Two months into the future, a hysterical Annalise breaks down in tears as she views the dead body of an unknown person as her home burns in the background.
