IN TREATMENT: WALTER: WEEK SIX (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about psychologist Dr. Paul Weston and his sessions with his patients. In this episode, Paul sits down with former CEO Walter Barnett, who admits that he finds it "humiliating" to be escorted to and from the mental hospital where he is currently staying by his adult daughter Natalie. He complains that the staff is "not very bright," especially compared to the wise Paul, though Paul is surprised at his uncharacteristic flattery and deduces that Walter is desperate to leave the hospital ahead of schedule. Walter describes the struggle of his monotonous daily routine, and though Paul suggests that he could use the time to "reflect" in a productive way, Walter explains that he is filled with anxious thoughts about his past. He states that he does not feel truly heard by the therapist staff members, and Paul expresses empathy for his pain, suggesting that he has been given a second chance after surviving his suicide attempt.

Walter explains that he has always had strong willpower and does not recognize this "other" version of himself who is emotionally vulnerable, and he grows angry when Paul mentions that Natalie spoke of her mother Connie's struggles with addiction, stating that he is to blame for her problems, as he has "always been her rock until now." Paul points out that Walter has considered himself "on-call" for other for decades and feels lost without a person or problem to fix, suggesting that his strong sense of responsibility stems from his brother's childhood death. He advises Paul to reconnect with that other part himself, the part that "wants to live," and Walter breaks down entirely as he considers his words.
