DYNASTY {2017 VERSION}: I HARDLY RECOGNIZED YOU {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this night-time serial, a remake of the 1980s television series of the same name, about the wealthy – and morally gray – Carrington family. In this episode, Fallon Carrington, confident that she will soon be named COO of Carrington Atlantic, whose business is "literally power," overhears two clueless businessmen discussing the incumbent collapse of her family's rival company Greenbriar Energy. She talks to her "bleeding-heart liberal" brother Steven, who has been summoned home by their father Blake, from whom he is estranged. Blake rejects his team's latest advertising proposal when head of public relations Cristal Flores suggests that he is "out-of-touch." Steven and Fallon arrive at their father's home and catch him in an embarrassingly intimate moment with Cristal; they are stunned to find that he has called them home not for a promotion or an apology, but to announce his speedy engagement to the much younger woman. Fallon, annoyed, informs Blake that Greenbriar is going under, but he brushes aside her business talk and pushes her to bond with her new stepmother-to-be.

Fallon complains to Michael, the chauffeur with whom she is having an affair, and tasks him with spying on Cristal. Elsewhere, Cristal tells her friends about the engagement, though they wonder if she remains enamored with Matthew Blaisdel, her married ex-lover. Blake sends Steven to negotiate with the Greenbriar head, suggesting that he will acquire the company and convert Carrington Atlantic to a 50%-renewable energy company, as Steven has demanded. Michael takes photos as Cristal privately meets with Matthew and tells him that their affair is over. Later, Cristal annoys the butler, Joseph, as she disdains his plans for a fancy engagement party and requests a more modern, outdoor event. Michael tends to his emotionally disturbed wife, Claudia. Meanwhile, Blake, having received photos of Matthew and Cristal via Fallon, invites Matthew over during the engagement photo-shoot and "introduces" his employee to Cristal. Steven meets with the Greenbriar CEO and wins him over with a candid admission that he is the "black sheep" of his family, but Steven is annoyed when the man makes sexual advances on him. Steven is then distracted by a handsome stranger, Sam; the pair instantly hit it off.

At an awkward "family" dinner, Fallon announces that she is meeting with "tech guru" Jeff Colby, one of Blake's proteges who became a business rival. Then, Steven accuses Blake of "whoring him out" under false pretenses using Fallon's tip. Both Carrington offspring realize that their manipulative father has used them. As Cristal demands to know if Blake was "testing" her with Matthew, Fallon suggests that she and Jeff "pool their resources." Elsewhere, Steven enjoys a private rendezvous with Sam, who robs him before departing. Blake apologizes to Cristal, who protests that her future stepdaughter does not respect her, after which Blake offers her a compromise. Fallon is outraged to find that the engagement party is now a wedding ceremony, and that Cristal has been made COO, the job that she thought would be hers. The two begin to fight, but Steven intervenes and advises his sister to "change the game" if she fears being replaced. Matthew arrives at the Greenbriar field and declares it to be his last assignment for the Carringtons, angered that his boss is marrying Cristal. The party guests are surprised to learn that the wedding has been moved up, and Cristal is touched to see that Blake has organized a hasty rearrangement and set the ceremony outside, as she requested. The two are married in a lavish ceremony, and Cristal questions her new stepson about his mysterious mother Alexis, but they are interrupted by none other than Sam, a.k.a. "Sammy Jo," revealed to be Cristal's nephew, who pretends not to know Steven.

Fallon talks with Jeff again, offering him a promising new "business opportunity."Across town, Matthew is among the victims of an enormous explosion at the Greenbriar site. An angry Falllon catches Cristal's bouquet before throwing it to Steven, then informs Blake that Carrington Atlantic has a new competitor: Carrington-Greenbriar, her new company that she is starting with Jeff's backing. Sam apologizes to Steven, who had not even noticed the theft, and hints that Cristal is the true "black sheep" of her family. Michael warily eyes Fallon's increasingly physical association with Jeff, and Joseph quietly informs Cristal that he has conducted a background check on her and now "knows everything." As the wedding wraps up, a hysterical Claudia arrives and accuses Cristal of killing her husband, declaring that the explosion was "no accident." Commercials deleted.
