BERLIN STATION: EVERYTHING'S GOING TO BE ALT-RIGHT {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The second season premiere in this dramatic suspense series about the spies and officials working at a CIA station in Germany. In this episode, Miller returns to Berlin as Esther Krug visits a morgue and selects a body. When the two meet up, Miller explains that his new cover identity, with which he intends to go undercover with neo-Nazis, is "Trevor Price," a disgraced ex-soldier discharged for killing Iraqi civilians. Esther notes that he did not finish his physical therapy after being shot four months earlier, and Miller hints at his experiences with his abusive father as they pose and "kill" the corpse with a shot to the head. "Price" then makes contact with targets, including Lena Ganz, explaining that he lost his temper while attempting to sell guns to the dead man, and they assist him in disposing of the body. Elsewhere, new Station Chief B.B. Yates, known as "The Station Whisperer," talks to her staffers about right-wing Chancellor candidate Katerina Gerhardt, who has ties to dangerous extremists, including Otto Ganz, father of Lena. Kirsch, surprised that Yates did not tell the others about Miller's undercover operation, then meets rookie agent April Lewis. He and Yates are then summoned to a sit-down with Ambassador Richard Hanes, who "requests" detailed information on all of their current operations. Kirsch, guessing that Hanes wishes to help Gerhardt win, is angered when Yates calmly agrees to his demands, but she then informs him that she was merely patronizing Hanes and intends to keep Miller's mission entirely "off-books" for the time being.
Miller, having indulged heavily in narcotics with his new "friends," awakens at Lena's home to find his wallet and phone missing. Yates meets up with Krug, who states that she needs assistance in planting cameras in Gerhardt's home, and the two women agree to help one another. Hanes meets up with Frost, now working as a consultant, and offers him a job in a new private intelligence outfit, which he describes as an "adjunct" to Berlin Station. Miller accompanies Lena and a few of her friends to a grocery store, and when one of the neo-Nazis prepares to attack the Muslim storeowners, Miller distracts him with some light vandalism. Yates instructs Edwards and Lewis to arrange for the surveillance on Gerhardt, adding that Hanes will be given "select" information about their op, and "Trevor" admits to Lena that he needs help in building a significant "client base" in Germany for his sale of illegal weapons. Miller then contacts Kirsch, who updates Krug, but Krug refuses to put assault rifles in the hands alt-right extremists to maintain Miller's cover. Edwards and Lewis spy on Gerhardt and make note of her schedule, and Kirsch convinces Yates that he "has a guy" who can provide the necessary weapons to convince Ganz of Miller's loyalty.
Lena tells "Trevor" about her father, explaining that he was a prison guard who did not hesitate to "exterminate" his prisoners when the Berlin Wall fell, and a disguised Kirsch places the weapons in their car. Lena admits that she has no money, but invites Miller to come and meet the elusive Otto. Lewis sneaks into Gerhardt's home to plant the cameras, and when Gerhardt's political advisor, Josef Emmerich, returns to the house unexpectedly, Edwards distracts him by pretending to search for her lost cat as Lewis finishes the installation and escapes. Kirsch and Yates discuss "the rogue factor" of their new operations, and when Kirsch meets up with Frost, he immediately dismisses Hanes' offer as a mere attempt to threaten Berlin Station's authority. Frost, taken aback, falsely claims that he immediately turned down the job. Miller dons a hidden microphone as he prepares to meet Otto, but one of Otto's men reveals himself to be an associate of Krug's as he searches Miller and destroys the mic, warning Miller not to underestimate Ganz. Otto is immediately suspicious when Miller states that he "works for himself," and Lena admits that her father has "trust issues." Emmerich tracks down Edwards and gives her his card, hinting that he saw through her lost-cat ruse, and Miller, determined not to lose his opportunity, returns to Otto and explains that he works with an "anonymous" arms dealer. Otto demands to be taken to him and, left with no other choice, Miller escorts him to a remote villa in southern Spain inhabited by none other than Hector DeJean. Miller quickly instructs DeJean to assume a former fake identity, that of criminal "Andrew Chevalier," and DeJean resentfully agrees to play along. Commercials deleted.
