DEAR WHITE PEOPLE: VOLUME 2, CHAPTER 1 {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The second season premiere in this comedy-drama series, based on the 2014 film of the same name, about a group of African-American students at the fictional, predominantly white Winchester University.

In this episode, in the aftermath of the protest and the integration of Davis House into Armstrong-Parker, Sam "wallows in existential melancholy" as she tries to think of a new discussion topic for her Dear White People show and notices some inflammatory Internet comments from an anonymous user, @AltIvyW. Al, Rashid, and Lionel debate the suspicious timing of the Davis House fire, and Joelle walks in on Sam in the middle of an intimate fantasy about Gabe. Reggie avoids Sam as Sam continues brooding over the Internet trolls, telling Joelle that anonymous hate is "not a conversation," and Joelle gives her some wise advice on "taking back her narrative."

In class, Sam gets into a debate with another student, Jamila, about the documentary "Why We Fight," and the black students are uncomfortable with the white students' reaction to P. Ninny's reality show. Sam tries to smooth things over with Reggie as Troy returns from "university jail," declaring his part in the protest to be "the best thing he's ever done," though Alt Ivy is quick with a barb about his release. Sam ends up in an all-night back-and-forth argument with the unknown Alt Ivy, briefly interrupted by a call from her dad; she is also surprised to see that Gabe is making a documentary entitled "Am I Racist?" in which Reggie is featured. In class, Sam is embarrassed to realize that her "all-nighter" on Twitter caused her to forget an assignment, but she continues her debate with Jamila outside of class, not wanting to fulfill the "trope" of two black women bickering in front of others. She invites Joelle to discuss Gabe's documentary with her on the air, only to find that the studio now also hosts a "Dear Right People" show in which conservative students complain about inclusion and "white genocide." When Alt Ivy posts a deeply offensive comment about Sam's parents' interracial marriage, Sam finally breaks down in tears.
