BOARDWALK EMPIRE: RESIGNATION (TV)

Summary

One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition.

In this episode, Van Alden, a.k.a. Mueller, continues working for Dean O'Banion, delivering both flowers and stern demands for money, and O'Banion instructs him to make sure that the Capones remain in Cicero and out of Chicago. In Plover, Emma tells Richard about her all-too-brief marriage and widowhood and inquires if he plans to stay with her for good. He seems to consider this when he finds that she is dangerously behind on her bills. Eddie Kessler grows increasingly defensive as Nucky notices his dwindling physical abilities; as Chalky proudly shows off the Onyx Club to his future son-in-law's haughty parents, Dunn admits that he still hasn't located Alma Pastor. Nucky arrives at Bader's groundbreaking ceremony and demands his usual cut, and though Bader tries to protest that the construction project is entirely the diocese's, Eddie grandly reminds him that Nucky is "all that there is" in Atlantic City.

Richard travels to Milwaukee and confronts Dolph Liebling, whom Carl Billings has paid him to kill, along with his men. But when Liebling confirms that he has a family, Richard cannot bring himself to go through with the assassination. Fred Elliot introduces Nucky and Eli to Agent Sawicki's replacement, Knox, who "jokingly" promises to enforce the laws of Prohibition. Van Alden frets about money when he learns how much Sigrid has spent in an attempt to fix up their dismal house; Chalky is surprised to meet the sinister and erudite Dr. Valentin Narcisse, who arrives at the Onyx Club with Alma in tow and observes that his fellow "Libyans" are permitted to work at, but not patronize, the club. He reveals that the "missing" Pastor was his employee, but Chalky stubbornly refuses to explain the encounter with Dunn. Eddie delivers Bader's payment and then gravely announces his resignation, feeling that Nucky does not truly appreciate his longtime loyalty; Nucky promises to demonstrate genuine respect for his valet.

In Wisconsin, Richard is heartbroken at the prospect of euthanizing their elderly dog, Samson, and tells Emma that he "doesn't want any more of it." Van Alden visits the Capones and awkwardly relates O'Banion's message; Chalky learns that Narcisse "owns a piece of" all of his performers and intends to bring the Onyx Club to a complete standstill until the Pastor matter is resolved. Nucky acts as mediator as Alma falsely describes being raped by Dunn and watching as he murdered her husband. Chalky is outraged when Nucky agrees to cut Narcisse in for 10 percent of the Onyx to settle the matter. Gaston Means reports that Knox is apparently trustworthy, and Van Alden finds himself in the midst of a brawl when the Capones burst in on a political rally to "persuade" the local voters to see their point of view. Elliot discovers that he has gravely underestimated young Agent Knox, who is revealed to be loyal to the Bureau of Investigation after all – and to J. Edgar Hoover himself. Alma thanks Narcisse for his assistance and suggests that she would like to see Dunn lynched; but Narcisse, suspicious of her scheme and disgusted by her willingness to "dilute" the races, has her killed. Nucky more or less promotes Eddie as he tasks him with hiding Bader's money. Back in Plover, Billings catches up with Richard and executes Liebling himself. Elsewhere, the press is stunned when Alma's corpse is discovered on Bader's construction site.
