ABC COMEDY SPECIAL: FATHER'S DAY {PILOT FOR UNPRODUCED SERIES} (TV)
Summary
This comedy special was intended as the pilot of an unproduced series.
In this episode, IRS agent Robert Morgan returns home to his wife and two children, learning that opinionated 14-year-old daughter Daisy has landed a spot on the school newspaper. After informing him that he has "gone over to the establishment" in working for the government, Daisy is excited by a phone call from her editor, high school junior Garrett, who invites her out on a date. Robert is alarmed by the idea, though wife Mary Ellen assures him that the young man is "refined and polite." Daisy frets about her appearance and admits that, embarrassed by her "geeky" middle-class suburban life, she lied to Garrett about her father's profession and claimed that he was "a Nazi hunter." Annoyed, Robert defends his job, but Daisy reminds him that he used to be a dissenter before settling into his seemingly heartless career.
Robert grudgingly covers up his work documents when Garrett arrives, and he sternly interrogates the young man about his dating habits as Mary Ellen reassures a nervous Daisy about the date. Robert and Mary Ellen are then surprised when Daisy returns home early, explaining that she left the party because she was not comfortable with some of the other guests' behavior. Younger brother Jonathan is delighted to hear that Daisy attended a "pot party," and Daisy heatedly explains that Garrett did not intervene with her leaving because he "respects her rights." Robert is appeased when Daisy explains that she came clean about his job and intends to write her first feature article about "life inside the IRS." When Garrett courteously phones to check on Daisy, she begins to reconsider her rebellious stance and wonders if she should embrace the life of a wife and homemaker instead. Includes commercials, promos and an ABC News Brief.
