LUCY SHOW, THE: LUCY AND THE COUNTESS HAVE A HORSE GUEST (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series starring Lucille Ball as Lucy Carmichael. In this episode, Lucy is surprised by an early-morning visit from her good friend Rosie Harrigan, now known as the Countess Framboise, who has just returned from a whirlwind trip of Europe. As the two friends catch up, Rosie admits that she is short on cash, but adds that her late, wealthy husband left behind "Oil Wells" – a prize racehorse. Lucy and Rosie head to the stables, where they encounter a strangely familiar trainer, and the stable manager sternly informs Rosie that she has a large outstanding bill for Oil Wells' care. Rosie assures him that she will pay it as soon as the horse wins a race, but he explains that the out-of-shape animal is in no position to win anything, and when he threatens to get his money back from "the glue factory" instead, Lucy and Rosie hurriedly whisk Oil Wells away – to Lucy's apartment.
As Oil Wells settles into life on Lucy's patio, Mr. Mooney bursts in and confronts Lucy about the "preposterous" charges on her bank account. He is thrilled to spot the Countess, however, and when he notices Oil Wells, Rosie blithely tells him about her "trifling little bill" and their need to get the horse back into racing shape, and he quickly summons a veterinarian. The vet soon discovers that Oil Wells is in fact pregnant, and Rosie and Lucy immediately begin preparing for the new arrival, drawing on their own maternal experience as they try to make the future mother comfortable. Lucy makes excuses to her downstairs neighbors as Mooney arrives with a strangely inappropriate "baby gift" and states that he is willing to buy the foal for $1,000, as Oil Wells comes from good breeding. The horse then goes into labor, and the three anxious "parents" are thrilled when she gives birth to two healthy babies. Includes commercials.
