STEP BY STEP: S.A.T. BLUES (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about divorced father-of-three Frank Lambert and widowed mother-of-three Carol Foster who bring their families together when they marry. In this episode, Dana nervously prepares to take the SAT, determined to get an excellent score to achieve her dream of an Ivy League college. Frank is frustrated that his children seem to be stealing his clothes without permission, deciding that his garments look cooler on them. Dana arrives for the test and is surprised to see Cody there, as he has never seemed particularly interested in academia, but he says that he is taking the test out of mere curiosity. At home, the younger kids prepare to raid Frank’s closet again, but are caught when his newly-installed alarm system goes off. Three weeks later, Dana is thrilled to receive her SAT results in the mail, but is less than thrilled with her score of 1270, and is horrified to learn that Cody received a 1320.
Cody is equally displeased with his high score, feeling that he has to “reevaluate some things” now that he has learned that he is smart, and worries he will be pressured into pursuing a challenging, intellectual career like medicine. Dana determinedly plans to take the test again and do better, and Cody debates the same thing. After much study, she takes a practice test and scores a 1350, but Cody bests her again and receives a 1400. Upset, she trashes her former good report cards from school, lamenting that she is not as gifted as she was led to believe and saying that she is “the smart one” in the family and relies on her intelligence as her identity. Karen reassures her, however, saying that her best is good enough regardless of anyone else’s scores, and she reconsiders. Dana offers Cody a college catalogue and tells him that while he does not have to be a brain surgeon or similar, he should consider making the most of his apparent gift. Elsewhere, Frank’s frustration with the kids’ thieving reaches a breaking point, and he takes out his aggression, ninja-style, on a watermelon. Includes commercials.
